for February 17th . . . more craphas coming today . . .I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

02/17/2020 at 1:23 pm #2065893Early release today due to impending weather. Will we start on time tomorrow?

02/17/2020 at 1:25 pm #2065894New superintendent this year. No late starts/early releases when other schools have been. No snow days yet either.
We haven’t had a late start in at least 15 years. We’re controlled by the bus company. Too many drivers have jobs that they go to after their morning route, so they can’t drive if there is a delay. Somehow, though, they have been able to get enough drivers for an early dismissal on a few occasions.
When schools owned the buses, they had more flexibility.

02/18/2020 at 12:40 pm #2065916We’re a little over halfway through our time in Mississippi. While this hasn’t been a trip to geocache, we have done some of that. Here are some observations. Mississippi currently lists 7066 active caches, two of which are upcoming events. Wisconsin shows 29, 427 active caches, of which 16 are upcoming events. I know Minnesota has similar numbers to Wisconsin. It’s just interesting that in a state where the weather is warmer year round….seldom if ever snows….the caching action is so much less. Not complaining, because as I said, we didn’t come down here to cache, cache, cache. Just interesting.
We have a few days of rainout now. We had started down the road to the NWR, but in spite of what weather.com said, rain did start before 1, so we came home. We hadn’t had any complete washout days until now, but there’s a TV here, LOL Friday looks good for the Mardi Gras parade and then later we’ll walk down the street where some blues musicians will be playing. The local music scene here seems to be kind of quiet, too, which is a little disappointing. Right now, because of a few factors, Natchez is in an economic downturn.
02/18/2020 at 6:23 pm #2065918I wonder if the heat deters people in greater numbers from geocaching in Mississippi (I just had to spell the name of the state; it’s so fun). In WI (it’s not as fun to spell) we can cache year round without discomfort. When it’s cold you just dress warmer. But when it’s hot & humid and 100+ degrees down south for a chunk of the year, many likely stay indoors with air conditioning. Just a guess. I’m not really sure how hot it gets there.
02/18/2020 at 6:24 pm #2065919We had a 2-hour delay today, which was about the same amount of time it took me to use a tank full of gas in the snowblower. Almost didn’t make it to work on time. Roads were great, snow wasn’t bad to throw, it’s just a matter of how long it takes to walk the distances I need to walk in order to clear out all the areas we try to keep clean. I didn’t really finish the job.
Hope everyone got out to vote during the primary today.

02/18/2020 at 6:37 pm #2065920I went surf fishing today for the first time…and was successful. We had fresh fish for dinner this evening 🙂 Looking forward to the Mardi Gras parade on the beach Saturday…hope the weather cooperates. There’s a cold front moving in tonight…only supposed to be in the 50’s for the next three days. When rain is forecast here it’s basically a light off-and-on drizzle. The last four days have been terrific though…entertained some friends from WI on two of them. No caches were harmed in the entertaining.

We were here the end of September. It…is…hot. And humid. It’s humid even now, our towels never seem to really dry out. So that might be part of it. But we didn’t see that people were hanging inside when we were here. I suspect to some extent there are other dynamics at work in this difference that have nothing to do with climate.
