How come not all of the state parks, does anyone know?
04/09/2020 at 5:15 pm #2066241My guess is the SPs nearest the higher population centers. Most are in southern WI (other than High Cliff) and experienced problems with tail gating, litter, and vandalism. Lake Shore was mentioned specifically. My daughter in Appleton said High Cliff was packed last weekend, with no “social-distancing” to be seen.
04/09/2020 at 5:30 pm #2066242Because they want to make it complicated :/ ……. But yes my guess are they are ones that are likely have been high impacted with groups congregating and with all the people, can’t even attempt to practice social distancing. I know at Devils Lake and Parfey’s Glen from an article they were as busy as a perfect summer weekend. Cars were parked along side of roads, and groups were gathering together in parking lots and open areas. (which if the parking lots are full, likely not going to be able to practice social distancing). I know the WGA cache at Natural bridge was getting a lot of logs, which if there were that many cachers can only guess how many others were visiting and with not that many trails there doesn’t equal room to spread out. I’m can only guess that the various park managers reported large issues in their parks and was decided based on that.

Several parks have had record attendance recently. For the weekend of April 4-5, High Cliff had an estimated 16,457 visitors, Lapham Peak had an estimated 11,168 visitors, Kohler-Andrae had an estimated 8,469 visitors, Devil’s Lake had an estimated 7,647 visitors, Richard Bong had an estimated 3,884 visitors, and Mirror Lake had an estimated 2,870 visitors.
Harrington beach had an estimated 3,639 visitors for the weekend has had more than 5,600 estimated visitors so far for the month of April. By comparison, the average monthly visitors at Harrington for the past 12 years is 9,695 for the entire month of April.

04/10/2020 at 7:34 am #2066245FTP for Good Friday.
I went out to do some essential shopping yesterday. Noticed very few people wearing masks.

04/10/2020 at 8:35 am #2066246Thanks Jim and Chris. Sad to hear about vandalism and disregard for rules. I guess it is nice that some parks are open but could close if that happens there too.

Ditto.
04/10/2020 at 3:15 pm #2066248Trekkin’ went out for essential shopping a couple days ago, and like others here have commented…hardly anyone wearing masks.
As for the park situation….I was actually surprised Perrot didn’t get included. We haven’t gone out there since this began, because we were seeing the effects of all the closures in our own close to town areas. We’ve encountered packed parking lots in areas where one other car is unusual at any other time, and have turned around and gone home. A friend who is on the board for Friends of the State Parks lives closer to Perrot and has shared that it’s been bad there as well, with litter and vandalism and big groups of people gathering. Most of those trails are not conducive to maintaining distance if you meet another along the trail.
We received some logs on a couple caches today and the name wasn’t familiar to us, so of course with nothing better to occupy my time, I followed up. It turns out to be someone literally on the other side of the state, who’s been caching all over between here, there and the southern border. I don’t think that’s quite in the spirit of things. IMHO
Since I’m kind of not a social being anyway, this hasn’t been as tough as it might be for others, but I do look forward to feeling it’s okay to go to Minneapolis to spend time with my mom, or take our trip to CO to visit our son and his family. Wyalusing is one of the parks that was closed, and that’s my “every May” trip for birding. Sigh.

Bet it won’t stay that way!

04/11/2020 at 8:47 am #2066251Have it on good authority WI was getting a lot of visitors from IL as well.
I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

I’m sure that was the case, as Illinois closed their parks March 16.

I’ve noticed a lot of activity on the State Park Series caches. I think some people are taking advantage of their furloughs and the free admission to parks, to work on finding SPS caches, and no doubt picking up other caches along their routes. The other trend that I’m seeing is increased activity on the oldest caches per county.

04/11/2020 at 11:52 am #2066258For the most part we’re not geocaching except to keep our two streaks alive. We’ve found a cache every week since we started caching in June 2010, and we’ve found an FTF every month since mid 2011. So it looks like we’ll be finding mainly one cache/week for the foreseeable future. FTF’d a new virtual yesterday for April.
