08/25/2020 at 7:25 am #2067104Optional days have been a real mess, leaving most of us less certain about our safety and the plans our District has for handling things. .
We’re in a similar place. One of my teammates was absent yesterday. He said that he had a bad headache and cough, so he took the day off to go get tested. We were told that we do not need to wear masks while alone in our classroom, but I had others come into my room with no masks, or I had to quickly grab my mask and put it on when others entered. My other teammate needs a lot of reassurance with technology, so he would come in, no mask, and pull up a chair right next to me. I’m not optimistic about how long in-person school will last.

08/26/2020 at 11:28 am #2067106My hiking buddy has a state parks pass. We had a trip planned to Governor Thompson State Park in July that got bumped to today. Unfortunately, I had no reception at the park. I had printed a trail map and had all the coordinates loaded, but I couldnāt see what caches were on which trails.
Debby you can load free maps on a GPSr that will show the trails of all of the state parks, and on smartphones you can load offline maps that will show the trails as well. On a smartphone you can load the caches “offline” on to the phone’s drive so you don’t need reception, and can put the phone in “airplane mode” so that the wifi and bluetooth are off, that way you don’t eat up the battery much, but can still navigate to the caches, with trails, because of a smartphone’s built-in GPS chip.Ā A bit complicated to set up the first time, but after that it’s smooth sailing.

Thank you.
Do you remember Miss Othmar, the teacher from the Peanuts animated shows, and how she sounded…wah-wah, wah-wah?
That is what I heard reading your response.Ā š
I basically understand what you are saying.Ā Doing it is another matter altogether.Ā I should have been more prepared, having the caches marked on my paper map.

LOL! I hear you, Debby. Sometimes the technical stuff can be a bit much. Sometimes you just want to take a nice walk in the woods and maybe find some tupperware while you’re at it. Nothing like a paper map.

Weāre in a similar place. One of my teammates was absent yesterday. He said that he had a bad headache and cough, so he took the day off to go get tested. We were told that we do not need to wear masks while alone in our classroom, but I had others come into my room with no masks, or I had to quickly grab my mask and put it on when others entered. Good to see he tested negative. I haven’t been in our building since I dropped of tomatoes back when we were still planting them instead of picking and pulling them. The guy next to me still doesn’t seem to get it, from what I’m hearing. Just like your teammate. If he did that to me, I couldn’t go home.
After three days of inservice meetings, I’m still not certain about what I’m going to be asked to do. There’s another meeting in about an hour that should finally answer questions. Everyone keeps kicking the can down to the next person right now. There’s another teacher at our school in a similar situation. We’ve been in contact the past few days, she’s been going through the exact same things I have been. Not sure if that’s good, but at least the district has been consistently ham handed.
I’m sure it’s the same everywhere that decided to open, and not much better for places that decided to go virtual. We don’t have the staffing for the kids we have in school, and the online options don’t have the staffing to handle those kids either. If one or two of our in person teachers are out sick, the whole house of cards falls down.

08/27/2020 at 2:48 pm #2067110I always make lists of caches in the caching app (or webpage) and make them available offline. When I’m walking out of the house, one of the last things I do is have the list reload the caches. No need to have cell service then. I like the idea of airplane mode, battery life is always an issue, especially as the weather gets colder.

08/28/2020 at 6:22 am #2067111FTP for Friday 8/28/2020 I’m looking forward to a rainy day to pay attention to neglected dishes. The Caches were calling!

08/28/2020 at 7:16 am #2067112Inservice training day.Ā Normally I’d have a quarter of my workday over by the time we’ll settle in for work today.Ā Still, it was nice to sleep in a little.
08/28/2020 at 10:37 am #2067113We have a 4-day weekend before school starts on Tuesday. Since Betty’s annual girls weekend in Door County was cancelled this year, we were going to take a day-trip today. With the weather, we decided to postpone until tomorrow.

08/28/2020 at 12:34 pm #2067114Wow, I feel like I just witnessed an episode of Animal Planet!Ā We have one of those egress windows in our basement spare room (where my computer is located). In the rock bed we have a sump pump sunk into the rocks to deal with water in the basement.Ā There are holes drilled in the bucket that holds the pump to allow water to drain into there.Ā I was hearing this noise.Ā Often after rain, toads get in there somehow, even though we have a window cover over the ground level opening.Ā So I look and there’s a vole running around in there.Ā He falls into the bucket and starts climbing up the plastic sides, looking for the opening.Ā All of a sudden, a leopard frog appears in there literally from nowhere (probably one of those holes) and the vole grabs its leg and they start battling.Ā It was fascinating and horrible to see.Ā The two vanished into that hole, but now the vole is back.Ā So is a mousetrap.

08/30/2020 at 8:32 am #2067118FTP for Sunday. I was duly impressed by the use of masks in Door County yesterday. Every business had signs saying that face coverings were required, and I even witnessed employees in one business reminding a patron to put on a mask.
