09/16/2020 at 6:39 pm #2067186Here’s a new twist to the “image hosting” problems that have been giving people problems. I’m trying to create a new cache before the big festival and got an error message saving the cache description. You can’t link to images hosted on outside websites now. That means I can’t link to the banner image hosted on this website to help promote the organization.
I stripped out the images and to get the cache published, but is there an easy work around for this? I used to have a dummy cache that I used to upload images to in the past, but GC forced that to go away years ago.

Thats actually really really frustrating that they implemented that. (As yes I had to test it out to verify) So yes it looks like with new caches you can’t link to external images. I did try to edit an existing cache and save it that has the banner and it at least allowed me to save it.
So as it looks like now, within the description editor you can upload an image to include it in the description right there. So that is nice but I don’t like how they limited to only that way 🙁 For adding a background image you have to complete the entire form process then go back and edit the cache and are then allowed to upload an image for the background.
As for an easy way to add the WGA banner I’ll have to play around. Feel free to download the image and then when creating the cache page, upload the image with their editor and add the text.

09/16/2020 at 8:36 pm #2067189And I have and update and a new working fix 🙂
So I have updated the banner HTML that can be copied to use on your geocaching.com cache page. You can view the updated code here https://wi-geocaching.com/info-center/files/cache-page-banners/
To read more details and their release notes feel free to check out this link: https://forums.geocaching.com/GC/index.php?/topic/358532-release-notes-website-upload-image-to-cache-trackable-description-hosted-images-going-forward-september-15-2020/
In summary, for all new cache listings and including an image you can either upload it using the WYSIWYG editor or can link an image like normal from an approved listing of sites (which they will periodically evaluate). All current existing cache pages still allow you to use any external sites. I have moved the images to the WGA’s Google Drive account and have allowed them to be linked.
You can see all of the approved sites to link images from here: https://www.geocaching.com/help/index.php?pg=kb.chapter&id=97&pgid=956
