I’m making progress on getting to know the Eau Claire geocachers. Hooray!

06/09/2015 at 7:25 am #2040418BobCam came through the area today. He checked on several of my caches for me. The only one he DNF’d was the one that was missing last time he passed through.
I had several BobCam logs, too.

06/09/2015 at 4:12 pm #2040429You mean you won’t be a pirate in search of treasure anymore, BBG?
I am always a pirate in search of treasure. The princesses just need more treasure than pirate now.
06/09/2015 at 7:56 pm #2040430Our black walnut tree came down today. Kind of sad, but it was dying, there were big limbs falling randomly on the sidewalk, and as it turned out, carpenter ants had taken over it. Luckily it seems no birds were nesting in it. The big flock of cowbirds will not be happy at sunset, however. They can go and be nest parasites elsewhere.
Pooh’s Pal had his first t-ball game tonight. Those things are always fun to watch!
It was beastly hot out there. I need to find out if I’m killing my gardens by mulching with the ground up black walnut stumps. It makes nice looking mulch. I am also starting to look around for a dulcimer builder to eventually help that tree sing again. We kept some nice logs for that purpose.
Oh, and I tried playing that Beatles song with no sheet music in front of me. Amazingly, I pretty much know it, though I get confused in a couple spots.
06/09/2015 at 8:48 pm #2040431Listen to Garden Talk on public radio. Short version is black walnut is very bad for other plants. Not sure about mulching with it but the poisons in the root system are notorious for eliminating anything else trying to grow.

06/09/2015 at 8:50 pm #2040432Hit 90+ again today. Big gusts of wind right now and a light rain just started. More wind than water so far

06/09/2015 at 9:01 pm #2040433I think I upset the rain clouds. Coming down now so the tv signal is bad.

06/09/2015 at 9:54 pm #2040434Apparently most of the native plants do fine with black walnut. Not the columbine. Hostas apparently love it and it kills a lot of weeds. If allowed to compost six months, nothing will be bothered by black walnut mulch. Most annuals do okay with it, too.
So I should mostly be okay with what’s been spread already. The offending chemical is called juglone. The internet can be amazing sometimes!

06/10/2015 at 5:41 am #2040436Discovered yesterday that I have a bluebird in the bluebird house.
Walked past it and was almost hit in the head by a blue missile.
Most years I spend the summer trying to clean the twigs out of it as fast as the wrens try to fill it.

Need someone to take that wood off your hands? I’m sure it was sad though, it’s funny how the trees in our yard become like familiar friends.
