06/10/2015 at 7:41 am #2040441A walnut tree in my mothers yard was blown over about 15yrs ago.
I made a coffee table for her out of some of the wood.
06/10/2015 at 8:09 am #2040442Apparently most of the native plants do fine with black walnut. Not the columbine. Hostas apparently love it and it kills a lot of weeds. If allowed to compost six months, nothing will be bothered by black walnut mulch. Most annuals do okay with it, too.
So I should mostly be okay with what’s been spread already. The offending chemical is called juglone. The internet can be amazing sometimes!
I have several VERY large black walnut trees in my yard and they have to be about the most toxic thing I know. Years ago, when we first moved into our present home, I had parked my car under one of them and the sap started to peel the paint off. I’d heard tell that the native Americans used the nuts to fish…dump a bunch in a pond and watch the fish float belly up. My walnut trees have killed off a variety of landscape projects. I have to move my compost pile away from the garage which is located under one of the trees. The nuts roll off the roof in the fall into the compost pile and taint it…have found out from personal experience to only use the compost for fill.
Just sayin’…I wouldn’t try any project involving black walnut products and expect it to successfully grow.Oconto...the birthplace of western civilization:)

06/10/2015 at 9:50 am #2040444Bartrod, many of the issues you mention are among the reasons we’re sad, but just kind of sad. The chips I’ve used so far are from a stump two years old from the last of the trees removed. We’ll see what happens.

06/10/2015 at 1:31 pm #2040446Wife wants a new patio furniture set. Found what she wants at Shopko, but the Marshfield Shopko is out-of-stock on the table. Kid checked the inventory in Rapids, and they have 6. Looks like I “HAVE” to go to Rapids, and maybe a bit beyond. I know there is a LFL Multi south of Rapids that I haven’t found yet.

I have some books I keep meaning to add to that LFL. We could probably do the new handful of caches in that general area whenever we do that…
06/10/2015 at 1:59 pm #2040448We finally have our first WGASPS biome souvenir. Any guesses as to which one? (No caches from a recent outing have been logged yet… and Birdin’ is ineligible for this contest, since I told her the answer.)
06/10/2015 at 2:12 pm #2040449Please, please, please please….PLEASE! Do not dump 3-5 inches of rain on us, if it must, please don’t flood the house. This could totally take us out of our BWCA trip this weekend…the only cool trip we’ll have all year.
I repeat….please!
06/10/2015 at 2:25 pm #2040450Well if you give me some of that black walnut wood I’ll make you a cribbage board. 🙂

They have a new one in Horicon too. Nice to see Wisconsin geocaching legends active again. I have noticed that Ray (Beast) has been trying to get the poorly maintained caches in Mayville taken care of by posting notes and NM on them.
