What a rotten way to spend your 6th birthday. Poohs Pal wiped out on the monkey bars at the park. Seems to be a sprain or jammed wrist but no break. He is the quietest I’ve ever seen him not asleep, propped on the couch with ice on said wrist.
Poor kiddo. As someone who typically has very bad birthdays, I can tell that the bad stuff always seems worse when it happens on your birthday. Give him extra snuggles today.

An excuse to hang out with college friends, play poker, darts, video games, etc.
We all seem to be getting older. Our first draft was 23 years ago.

08/22/2015 at 9:36 am #2042315Here are some pics that we took on Wednesday of the sunflowers just SW of Eau Claire:

08/22/2015 at 9:42 am #2042316To find them, take Route 37 south of Eau Claire, then turn west on to Highway 85. We started seeing the sunflowers just west of the wayside area, and they continued off and on on both sides of the highway till at least the Dunn County line, which is where we turned around to continue on our travels. The flowers are past their prime now.
08/22/2015 at 10:37 am #2042317While we’re on the sunflower topic–I bought a pot of four sunflowers at a garden center a few years ago. They were put on the west side (full sun), but they only last a couple weeks, getting maybe a foot and half tall. I blame myself (too much or not enough water, should I have repotted them? etc.) but then again, maybe they just didn’t grow as well as some plants do. I have returned to that nursery every year and never found them again, nor at any other local place selling plants in the spring. Perhaps it would be better to start them myself from seed. When is it best to do that? Are they perennial? Is one variety hardier than the others? Advice?

08/22/2015 at 12:08 pm #2042319You can get packets of sunflower seeds with the rest of the seeds (flowers, veggies) in the spring. Plant according to the directions on the packet. They are not perennials, and they will be damaged by frost (spring/fall). We usually plant seeds in mid-May or a bit later. As their name says, sunflowers like lots of sun. The fancier colors and varieties are done the same way as the regular yellow ones. Just check out what is available and buy the ones that strike your fancy.
We have had problems with squirrels digging up the young seedlings and ripping off the seed heads when they develop, and the bunnies (aka terrorists) will chomp on anything. We have grown single plants in pots on the deck, but those have needed staking or tying to keep them upright in the later stages.
If you put out sunflower seeds to feed the birds in the winter, there are usually some “volunteer” sunflowers that pop up near the feeders, and if they end up in out-of-the-way spots, we leave them to develop as if we had planted them ourselves. You can even save out some of the seeds from your big bags of bird seed and plant those in your garden in the spring.
