12/23/2015 at 1:59 am #2045391–PRODUCT ALERT– I needed a new set of ice cleats…
I’ve bought many pairs of ice cleats over the years. They get a lot of use. Some were great; others were terrible.
The dealbreaker for me: they MUST have a top Velcro strap or a buckle if they are for a serious winter outdoor hiker. I’ve lost so many pairs (half pairs, actually) that didn’t have a strap because they would eventually slip off in the snow without me noticing it until I was back on the ice.
Most brands I’ve seen have a simple stretchy rubber to cover the heel and toe. Those are the ones I lose. Some cheapie ones are a simple band an inch or so wide with two to four spikes on the bottom. They slip off faster than a dress on prom night.
The WORST I’ve had are “Extreme Ice Cleats” by Hot Headz. They have a strap so they won’t easily slip off, but like jar42’s saga, most of the spikes broke off the first time I used them on ice. They would probably be OK for snow but not ice.
I think we’ve owned 9 pairs so far. We’ve had the best luck with YakTrax. Instead of spikes or studs, they have hundreds of steel coils and do a good job. However I much prefer the YakTrax Pro ($30), which has a Velcro strap on top, instead of the standard YaxTrax ($20), which does not have the strap.
12/23/2015 at 8:33 am #2045400Is there supposed to be something fun to do with today’s Google doodle? I can’t get it to do anything, but it looks neat.
12/23/2015 at 10:21 am #2045402Those are the Yak Trax we have, with the strap. I do sometimes have the front slip off, but the straps keep them in place.
12/23/2015 at 1:56 pm #2045404I had almost talked myself into buying a set of Yak Trax when I read the reviews saying that using them for shoveling snow on a concrete surface will lead to premature failure. That is exactly what my primary use is.
I’ve come up with another solution to the Due North cleat problem. I read somewhere that one can buy a box of 100 spare cleats for $60+. Then all I have to do is replace cleats every time I use them. 😀

What is GFCI?
12/23/2015 at 4:48 pm #2045408GCFI = ground fault circuit interrupter… those outlets by sinks and in the bathrooms that shut off if something plugged into them gets wet or the circuits are otherwise compromised. Need a few to meet code.
12/23/2015 at 6:14 pm #2045411When we bought this place, built in 1922, they didn’t have those here, and it didn’t seem to stop the bank from letting us buy it. Course, it was a tough seller’s market in those days. When we did the addition, they were installed and now we’re good.
How soon do you get a “for sure” on this?

I wondered that too. I didn’t have time to really look earlier, but now I did, and I found this
It is several options down after just clicking the doodle itself.
12/23/2015 at 7:03 pm #2045416Saw the new star wars film last night. I give it a grade of “incomplete” at this point. It’s only the first of three parts. Looking forward to parts two & three.
