Made it home. Gradually getting those SP caches done. It was a good weekend to be outdoors instead of driveling!
05/08/2016 at 7:57 pm #2049459Spent the weekend visiting our two favorite state parks. Roche-a-Cri opened for the season on Friday, and Saturday was the work/play day where volunteers helped spiff up the place. We helped rake the camp sites and other heavy use areas. The place looks good, and it’s ready for visitors!
Today we hiked more of the Ice Age Trail in Hartman Creek SP and Emmons Creek Fisheries Area, putting in 3.4 miles and finding four caches on the IAT there that we hadn’t had the opportunity to go for before. Lots of people camping and picnicking at the summer home. We only did the latter.

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

05/09/2016 at 6:15 pm #2049481“This too shall pass” is one of those wise phrases Mom said. We’re having a rummage sale Friday and Saturday. It’s probably been at least 20 years since we’ve done this. I don’t love these things, at least the work in holding one. Trekkin’ really digs it. So this is a week of going through stuff and trying to set up, so we can sit in the garage for two days hoping to make a couple bucks, when I could be out birding during peak migration.
Sigh. I think this is what they were talking about with that “for better or worse” stuff.
05/09/2016 at 7:27 pm #2049483Or…maybe not. On top of needing to buy a new vehicle, now our hot water heater doesn’t make hot water anymore. We’ll call the plumber in the morning to see if he can do anything with it, or we might be buying and installing a new one of those, too. Ugh. Hope we make tons of money at this rummage sale! *eye roll*
05/09/2016 at 7:53 pm #2049484Gwyn ,gas or electric?
If electric:
Check thermostat to see if breaker popped and can be reset.
Check both upper and lower thermostats. Could also be the upper and or lower element. I’ve had each of these things happen with mine. And have replaced several thermostats.
Disclaimer : Always answering to a higher power.

If it’s electric… Depending on the age of the water heater, it’s a pretty easy fix if it’s a heating element. You can buy some time and repair it for fairly cheap. Power and water off, unscrew the wires to the elements, Drain the unit (hardest part if you don’t have an easy area to drain it to), they make and sell a special cylinder wrench to remove the element (there are two elements usually), pull out the element and replace with a new one. Often it’s the lower element that has been buried in mineral deposits so flush this out of the bottom of the tank. About $60. I fried the top element in my heater when I turned it on for the season before the tank had completely filled. If one element fails the other one often won’t heat. I purchased everything I needed in a hardware store up north. If Dick or you want to try it and save some money and need more information, PM me. I would loan you my wrench if you stopped up north…

05/10/2016 at 5:41 am #2049506Old gas water heaters could easily last 40 or more years. They would finally get so much lime in the bottom that the thermostat couldn’t sense the water temperature and you never knew what temperature water you were going to get.
The new ones, it seems, are designed to meet their warranty then fail, usually a small leak which can only be detected when the water is hot and thus under higher pressure.
05/10/2016 at 6:40 am #204950718 School days left. This is the year that I wish would not end. Best class I have ever had, both behaviorally and academically.
