Great feedback and discussions. Being a former US Forest Service employee, we should also consider our National Forest public lands as possible WGA venues as well. This includes the Great Lakes Visitor Center near Ashland, WI – a fantastic site for a WGA event. The Managers have been great to work with and see the value of geocaching as an educational aspect for families. No fee to visit either.

05/07/2017 at 3:11 pm #2055037I’ve been watching this whole debate go on for a couple day now, and I think it’s a good thing being discussed here. Looking back at past WGA events, it looks like the upcoming campout is the first event between the campouts and fall picnics not to be at a State Park. However, other events have been at city and county properties across the state. My first two WGA events were at Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary a few years back, and that’s owned by the city of Green Bay.

05/07/2017 at 6:55 pm #2055038Had fun with the grandkids 🙂 I have no opinion on WGA sites…all venues I’ve been to have been great…but it’s always been about the people and not necessarily the park. Sorry to say, I’m going to miss both the camp out and picnic this year…have my annual fishing trip planned for May and a trip to the Big Apple in September:(

I have no opinion on WGA sites…all venues I’ve been to have been great…but it’s always been about the people and not necessarily the park. Sorry to say, I’m going to miss both the camp out and picnic this year…have my annual fishing trip planned for May and a trip to the Big Apple in September:( We will definitely miss you at both. And yes, an event is just that, socializing with others in a place no matter where it happens to be.
I just returned from the Big Apple late Wednesday night. Had the opportunity to visit the 9/11 memorial, eat in the village (which happens to have 5 restaurant owners from Wisconsin, one with whom I spoke with extensively that was from Madison and has a book that I purchased and he signed), visited Broadway, Wall Street, Rockefeller Center, and Central Park. Spent some time in St. Patrick’s Cathedral before going to the Park Plaza Hotel (now just the Fairmount) for a glass of $18 wine. Overpriced but the ambience was something else.
Have a great time!!!
I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

05/08/2017 at 5:15 am #2055043I don’t read this thread much, (I should, it does give a lot of insight, I just don’t have that kind of time), but the conversation was brought to my attention and I would like to voice my opinion. The WGA should make use of every available property that fits the needs of the event that is being hosted. If a county park fits that bill, by all means, it should be used. If I remember correctly, the most recent event was held at a city park. I myself find that any extended geocaching trip is planned so I know what to expect as far as where I’m staying, and what I’m going to be able to do when there. I don’t need consistency to dictate my trip, it’s all about new adventures.
Now to the second issue that seems to be present in this topic. The spread of the Emerald Ash Borer is regulated through quarantine of specific counties. EAB and Gypsy Moths can both be transported through firewood, and the WDNR has established very standard rules for moving firewood. A quick Google search yielded a plethora of information on both species and where firewood can be moved. The state parks all require that wood be certified by the DATCP. County and private parks may not require this, but must follow firewood movement rules established by the quarantine.
My two cents, see you guys in this thread the next time I am directed to it, or find myself in an airport for 5 hours with nothing to do
My posts should in no way be considered as the views or opinions of the WGA or its Board of Directors. All posts made under my name are my personal opinions only.

I actually like the idea of using National Forest facilities for WGA events. I say keep the ideas flowing to make this game better.

05/08/2017 at 10:44 pm #2055057I think that this conversation belongs in the suggestion box forum. We need to get back to some serious useless drivel here.
All opinions, comments, and useless drivel I post are mine alone and do not reflect the opinions of the WGA BOD.

05/09/2017 at 8:20 am #2055060OK guys here’s your chance to steal a thread!
What should we talk about? hmmmm beer – nope been done, bonfire – when?, rockets – now there’s a topic. I once saw a cache that looked like a rocket. How cool was that! Didn’t fly very high when tossed. Needed more powder. What’s on your mind?
Remember this??? Time to return this thread to Drivel, Serious stuff needs it’s own thread.

05/09/2017 at 8:38 am #2055062Maybe it’s time to bring back the FTP competition, minus the monthly count posting. So here’s 12.
05/09/2017 at 8:40 am #2055063My wife’s kitchen remodel is coming along on schedule but she started having a meltdown last night when the painter missed showing up with paint samples and didn’t return her calls…always a good time to head down to the corner bar for a beer. All is good today though…whew! 🙂
