Wow, what a bunch of great information. After doing “Where Did I Park My Car” GC7F54 yesterday, between the 3 of us I bet we picked off 30 ticks at least. I can’t wait to try permethrin. Did someone say you can pick it up at Wally World ❓

I never tried it myself, but you can pick it up at Wal*Mart:

I usually use 90%+ DEET products around my ankles and waist line. That usually keeps the little bastards off!

Problem is the high Deet is rough on skin, it wouldnt have helped my wife. She got one at the hairline on the neck. That stuff at Wally World is for horses, have you found a new form of transportation to caches?

We bought a 6 oz. can of Permanone by Repel at Wal-Mart for $6. For repelling ticks on clothing and gear, DO NOT apply to skin. You apply it to the clothing and let it dry for 2 hours before wearing. If you’re buying this for the campout remeber to read the instructions or there will be a lot of naked campers standing around waiting for their clothing to dry. We also saw it at Sherper’s and Gander Mountain for $7. It contains.5% permethrin.

I spray the high DEET stuff on my clothes, not my skin necessarily. I spray it on my socks and pant legs and then my waist line. Most ticks grab on your legs as you travel through the tall brush/grass, so they have to pass your waistline or socks to get any higher. Ticks also tend to travel as high as they can go before attaching, so creating a barrier is a good deterrent. You don’t need to spray it on your skin.

For ticks in the hair, unless you are on all fours crawling through brush, it is unlikely they started there. They probably grabbed onto you from your waist (or lower) and crawled the remainder of the way. That is why I spray DEET barriers.

I guess I should have put a smiley face after that link. I thought it was funny they sell “equine” bug spray!

As for transportation to caches – horses does bring up an interesting twist because they negate the “No Motorized Vehicles” signs that I despise! 8)

Uggh – spent all weekend caching and no ticks on either myself or my kids but the little one had one on her back this afternoon… those things are tough to get off. Had no idea they liked backs so much so thanks for that info and the repellent info. May get some for the clothes.

Every time I read this thread I start to itch and I haven’t been ou tin the woods in weeks.

I’ve been spending a lot of time lately in overgrown fallow farm fields and transitional areas going from fields to woods. Surprisingly, I have yet to find a single tick. Very unusual for me.

Funny, I was feeling itchy also as I was reading through the replies. We have purchased some permethrin from REI and plan to use it on our clothes for the campout.

I recently read that if you take a cotton ball and soak it with liquid detergent then hold it on a tick for 15 seconds they will come right off. Does it work? I don’t know. Next time I get one I’ll try it and let you know.

The doctors recommend NOT to do that. the ticks tend to spit up what they are digesting when you put that chemical on them, increasing the risk of getting Lyme’s or something else by 300 times!

Just a little over a dozen little critters today… oh the joys of spring caching.

Haven’t gotten any from the sherwood area yet. Been to high cliff and surrounding parks many times in the last 2 weeks wallowing around in the leaf piles and sticks and have not yet found any.

Good news for those of you attending the upcoming camp-out…

Now lake flies on the other hand are impossible to not take home with you.

shudder……lake flies…….shudder I grabbed a handful of a tree to catch myself while searching for a cache on Saturday,,,, 100% covered in lake flies… SQUISH does NOT even convey the feeling of that….YUCK!

I couldn’t find Permanone at the Oshkosh Wal-Mart. I hope Scheel’s or the appleton walmart has some to grab on the way up to the park on Friday, as I would REALLY like to not have to use the DEET, it gives me mild burns.
