I recently read a news article by channel3 http://www.channel3000.com/news/9287173/detail.html “Sex Sting In Olin Park Busts 29 People” and became slightly worried about caching in Madison parks.
Not for fear of stumbling upon some of that activity but more so the tickets that were handed out. One in particular: walking off designated trails.
Maybe they handed out a ticket for that to increase the fines to the people involved in the ‘sting’, but it has me concerned if we’re hunting geocaches that would most likely be ‘off trails’ within the parks that a police officer will ticket us as we leave the area.
Anyone have any more information on rules for being on a city park? I assumed one could wander through any area of the park unless it’s a nature reserve or posted not to go off paths. I couldn’t find any “Do Not xyz” information on Olin’s website: http://www.cityofmadison.com/parks/major/olin.html nor any signs when I stopped at the park for lunch by the lake yesterday.
Am I being overly paranoid again? 😉

I saw this report on the 6PM Channel 3 news. They did show some actual signs along some of the trails that said something to this effect with a MGO number on it. I am guessing it is only a violation where specific signage is posted. Such as areas where they are trying to remove such off trail activities 😮
I’ll have to go see where these signs are sometime then. I didn’t see any from the vantage points I was at. Thanks for the info.
I also saw that article. but I believe that the “stay on trail” signs are only for sprecial areas and in the “conservation areas” of Madison Parks. This (geocaches being placed in conservation areas) is one of the reasons that Madison banned geocaching for a while. If we respect these conservation areas of the parks, there should be no problems.
I would find it hard to believe that they would give a ticket for an activity that they have approved and have a policy in place. I think that it was just a way for the city to get rid of the unwanted activities that were taking place.
