For those who havent been out, or haven’t noticed them yet it seem that the ticks are out in force. I plucked 12 of them off of me in 2 hours doing mostly urban caches on Friday (I have only seen about 5 on me in the two years caching prior)
04/05/2010 at 2:05 am #1926677I was crawling around in brush today for a couple of hours and didn’t find any. I have no doubt that they’re out in force though.
04/05/2010 at 2:10 am #1926678We were up in the area of the sand people and our friends dog came in with several ticks on him.
04/05/2010 at 2:14 am #1926679I pulled 16 of them off me the other day.
I went caching today, circling around Lake Petenwell, found several more.
I now make it a point to look down at my pant legs periodically, flicking away any ticks as soon as I notice them..
Most ticks that have climbed onto your body climbed on at a point below the knees. All those ticks you find on your back or your chest– chances are they climbed up there from down by your kneesAnd now to clear up some common Misconceptions about ticks:
Ticks can not fly
Ticks can not jump
Rarely do ticks inhabit treesThe hang out in the grass or in brush, waiting for a potential host to climb onto. Ticks don’t come to you, they wait for a host to come to them.

04/05/2010 at 2:31 am #1926680Yeah, but ticks suck! ๐
04/05/2010 at 2:35 am #1926681I picked two off the other day on the Wildwood trail and one was attached.
04/05/2010 at 2:36 am #192668204/05/2010 at 2:45 am #1926683It’s a constant stream of them with us. Wood and deer. Trekkin’ is not happy. He has been an unwilling host to lyme ticks three times, and does not welcome them a fourth. There seems to be something in his chemistry that draws them.
04/05/2010 at 2:55 am #1926684Most I’ve found on me at one time was 10 at once..two were attached.
Haven’t found one yet this year, but I’ve been mainly staying out of tick infested areas.
That might change when I go on my numbers run in Marquette on Thursday.
I do admit I kinda like the sound one makes when an attached tick is removed form someone…you know..that “pop” sound.
Satisfying to know you got rid of it when you hear that “pop” sound.
I’ve had a couple infections from woodtick bites before..but none from deer ticks yet.
04/05/2010 at 2:56 am #1926685Lyme disease is named for Lyme, Connecticut. supposedly there are a lot of deer ticks in Lyme, CT.
I used to live less than 10 miles from Lyme, CT. I wouldn’t say they have a tick problem over there by any means. In the years I lived in southeastern CT, I only found 1 tick.. And it wasn’t even a deer tick.04/05/2010 at 2:59 am #1926686I pulled on off me last week. Heading to Roche a Cri tomorrow with the family. We’ll probably spend as much time checking each other for ticks as we do caching. ๐

We don’t usually notice them much in Roche-A-Cri, although they’re there.
The massive tick attacks have hit us when we go out caching all day on Memorial Day, both last year and the one before. The grassy areas were the worst.
04/05/2010 at 4:29 am #192668804/05/2010 at 5:13 am #1926689I pulled the first tick of the year off on March 20th. There was still lots of ice and snow on the trails, but they were active. Probably up to about 20 so far this year, including two deer ticks. I found on on one of our cats the other day. The cats never leave the house, so it must have hitchhiked in after a caching trip.

When I take into account these know items it amazes me the density of ticks. Iรขโฌโขm no statistician or the like, but when I look at a wooded area that covers several hundred acres and I only walk through a two foot wide path for usually 20-30 acres deep to how many ticks are picked up just in the entry of the woods. It boggles my mind to fathom how many ticks must really be out there for a person to randomly gather so many.
