MemberI had my first tick in mid-March, and it was a deer tick. The last two weeks have been major tick city in central Wisconsin. I had an attached deer tick yesterday….hoping he was benign! 👿

ParticipantIf deer tick numbers are related to the deer population, it makes sense. You would think that, more deer, more ticks…less deer, less ticks, but Mother Nature has a strange sense of humor.
Since the deer numbers are down, it takes MORE ticks to keep the balance, lest the species perish (heaven forbid).
Still waiting for my first one but I’m not rushing out to find it!04/05/2010 at 2:04 pm #1926693Lacknothing
ParticipantFirst tick this year just yesterday (named him Tim). I was surprised….generally do not see them until May…but then again, spring usually isn’t so warm in March either. Having contracted Lyme’s several years ago, I am always on high tick alert.
Truth be told, if it wasn’t so nice out, this could really “tick” me off! (I could not resist)

MemberThe reason we pick up more ticks than hikers, fisherman and other outdoorsmen is that we spend so much time off-trail. As someone said earlier, you need to brush up against a bush or plant so that the tick can transfer to you. If you are just hiking down a 6 foot wide trail, you will only get the ticks that crawl up your boots. If you are fighting through thickets, crossing marshes, or just lying on the ground looking in hollow logs, you are much more exposed to the spots ticks can be hiding.

Definitely need to do a tick check after this activity! A spot like that was tick heaven for us a couple of years ago!

MemberI use this stuff and it workes great. Repel Permanone. Copper colored can with a blue top. I think Wally World still carries it. DO NOT APPLY TO SKIN THOU! It is ment for Clothing and boots and such. And what is great bout it is that you can wash the your clothes and will still work. About $6 a can.

MemberThat stuff’s good, but has not been entirely successful in Trekkin’s case.
Can you say “tick magnet?”

MemberYa I’m sure. Like anything, it’s not going to stop them all, but it does help. I also spay mt pants down with regular bug spray before hitting the woods. Was out this morning in the woods and have not felt anything crawing…yet. I did have a tick dug into my upper arm a few weeks ago. My arm was pretty red when I found it , but it cuz I was scrathing it. All cleared up now.

MemberSomeone needs to find another japanese beetle or something to eliminate them…but then that will probably become invasive ..argh..

MemberWe cached on Friday in Gov Thompson State Park, Crivitz area and Menominee, MI and pulled about 20-25 ticks between the two of us. They don’t bother me much as I grew up spending a ton of time in the woods, but Lynn is a city girl and does a funny dance every time she sees one. 😆

MemberSaturday was our first time out after a long busy winter…and we found two ticks.
We were commenting on how nice it was this time of year with no lake flies to contend with…forgot all about early season ticks.
