I pulled 2 ticks off my legs out here in California today, I was kinda hoping i would have to worry about them here.

We went caching where the ticks were so bad…………………………… we thought the caches where moving themselves around the map on our Garmin’s screen, until we realized the caches had eight legs, and were ticks. 😯

Boomerang ticks they were, cuz when you’d flick ’em off, they’d come flyin’ right back on ya! Really! 😈

Had my worst encounter with a tick this year. Found it….well…let’s just say it was a place I can reach when I need to, but have a hard time seeing. Luckily it was just a wood tick and he wasn’t completely at home yet. Total of 8 pulled off me this weekend at different times (including one of the smallest I’d ever seen!), but that one was the most awkward. Good thing Mrz. BakRdz didn’t mind acting as the exterminator.

yeah, and it seems his family is really friendly…lol… sorry, couldn’t resist 😈

(we removed 5 ticks from Fox Brook park Sunday… one died on site, the other 4 we gave a porcelain burial)

To ensure we didn’t have any BakRzd BakEndz encounters, we had a few runs deep into tickland, where we actually went prepared: Long and Light shirts and pants; pants tucked into long socks with high-top boots; and ample duct tape, after a while, to keep the socks up and over our pants. All laced with DEET, DEET, DEET! 😈

Worked well at keeping the ticks off the body, and visible on the cloths. Still found a few in the vehicle, and even one crawling across the gps as we were preparing to take off to the following cache. Oh yes, and then there was the one stinker, crawling and tickling up one of our backs, while we were trying to look calm and normal standing in line at a DQ…..in our duct taped-pants! 😆

Hmmmmm, maybe the duct tape should have been applied with the sticky side out…….like having fly-papered legs. Oh the things you’d collect! Great for show and tell! 😈 😈 😈

Team Sloughfoot is claiming a new record. We were north and west of Coloma on Sunday at Hidden Valley GC148MR. A really nice walk with a surprizing view at GZ. We even sat and enjoyed the view for a few minutes, big mistake. Got back to the car and noticed a few ticks and started picking. After about 24 we felt we had them under control. That was well into the creep zone but headed to the next cache. Hadn’t gotten too far down the road before more were crawling out and going out the window. Got on a dirt road near the next cache and Mrs. S. was ready to jump out the window and she was driving. Pulled over in a remote spot and, cover your eyes, the clothes came off. Turned everything inside out and picked ticks until the total became 46. We looked like a pair of monkeys picking at each other in our underwear. At that point a tour bus could have come along and I wouldn’t have noticed. Found more when we got home and are worried the car is infested. Got to love this sport. After finding a few more in the car the total is up to 49 and one that showed up at 3am makes it 50.

It makes you wonder, where these buggers have been hiding when they show up hours/days later!!!!! I am always afraid they hide in my hair (my hair is almost waist length and auburn in color). Do they work in groups?? … “Hey, you guys hide over here, I’ll draw there attention in the other direction” <

Yeiks….after about 2 or three I would throw in the towel. Thanks goodness for urban hides…during these tick heavy months my find totals go way down.

I het a dozwn or so caches last week, including a series that is a bout 4.5 mile round trip in the deep woods and a couple others that were next to a river that I had to bushwack to and never pulled a tick off. I was wearing a pain of pants that I treated with Permanone. later in the week I took a walk down a ski trail with the dogs which is mowed an pulled about a dozen or so off and one the next morning that was attached on my hip. Was wearing jeans that was not treated. I think the Permanone works!
I will add that it’s getting harder to find in stores.

That’s contains the serious stuff, Permethrin, and should KILL ticks on contact, with a good dose. We’ve not made that move yet, as it’s a bit on the nasty side for our recreational use. Label warnings are sobering; can sicken pets, etc. ➡ We use DEET, which is ‘just’ a repellent………and duct tape when we’re ‘going in there.’

We were caching north and east of sloughfoot’s locations yesterday, and we only got one………50! YOW! 😯 😯 We’d still be feeling them! Any of them deer ticks?

Love your tick story, sloughfoot! That was the cache that got us “ticked” last Memorial Day, and we did four more after that one. Never sat down there, but we still ended up picking off ticks the rest of the day and evening.

Just wondering if you and Mrs. S did your de-ticking near one of those trail cams that the DNR says they have placed in random spots throughout their properties!

But the Hidden Valley cache is well worth the visit, at the top of our short list of favorites. Should be OK in another month or so, tickwise.

            OMG 46 – I would have fainted ! 😯

New idea, a tick-hazmat type suit built with the white sticky tape to the outside! By the end of tick season, you could trim it to a Versace-like polka dotted gown… 😉 😆

As someone who deals with this chemical on a daily basis, I can tell you that exposure to this is very serious. Anyone handling this in our facility is required to wear impermeable gloves, a rubber apron, and a face shield. In the event of a spill or other major chance for exposure, people are required to wear full body protective clothing. Anyone getting exposed to this, despite the precautions, is immediately sent to the clinic for observation and testing.

As you might guess, I won’t use this or allow it to be used by any of my loved ones.

Yet another good reason for me to stay out of the thickets a bit more during the tick season…
