i’ve just been told that the bong recreation area is known as tickville. i heartily agree. i was out there today with lucky, and after caching, i spent 20 minutes in the parking lot pulling ticks off of her.. they were everywhere, even between her toes. since we got home, i have pulled and drowned in alcohol another 30. and i’m sure there are a few more hiding. what would we do without frontline to make her less tasty to those wretched bugs. only thing is, when they drop off and land on my couch or rug and then find their way onto me…..

So is it just at Bong or the whole Burlington area?

I believe it would be the entire upper midwest. This seems to be about the same saturation as last year for ticks. As Bong is a grassland/prairie, this is where they thrive. Additionally, most of the caches in Bong require at least some bushwacking, so the ticks just hang in the weeds and wait for someone to hitchhike on.

The strangest thing is that I have picked off at least 1000 ticks off myself, but I have never had to extract one. Usually they don’t bite me, but even when they do, they seem to release immediately. Maybe they are allergic to me or something? I did find one trying to suck blood out of my boot once. I believe that one might have been deranged.

I got to pull one out of my nephews ear on the last day of the camp-out…. He was latched in there pretty good too. I never saw a tick all weekend, except fro the dozen or so I kept pulling off of him before they could latch….I guess he is the opposite polarity of you. 🙂

I have been fortunate so far this year-I haven’t even seen one yet. I remember back in ’82, a car ride from Hazzlehurst to Three Lakes, We constantly picked ticks off of ourselves for the entire trip and most of the night. I sure don’t miss those kind of days.

How come no one has come up with a vaccine for Lyme yet???

    #1889506

    I believe they have:
    Treatment and Prevention

Most Lyme disease patients can be successfully treated with standard antibiotics. FDA approved Ceftin (cefuroxime axetil) Dec. 19, 1996, for the treatment of early Lyme disease. Recommended regimens of oral antibiotics can speed the healing of the rash, and can help prevent subsequent symptoms such as arthritis or neurological problems.

Hansen says that patients treated in the early stages with antibiotics usually recover rapidly and completely. Patients treated in later stages of the disease also may respond well to antibiotics, but in some cases, symptoms of persisting infection or inflammation may continue or recur, causing permanent damage.

“Lyme disease is a great masquerader,” she says. “The bacteria may lay dormant and the symptoms disappear, but as the bacteria becomes active again, the symptoms will reappear.” Hanson adds, “Even when the bacteria is eradicated from the body, the damage that has already been done may persist.”

FDA, CDC, and the National Institutes of Health all agree that education is the most important part of Lyme disease prevention. Research has indicated that early removal of a tick can ward off much of the danger, but diagnosing the disease and treating infection remain difficult.

“I can’t emphasize strongly enough the importance of finding a doctor who is experienced in recognizing this infection,” adds Don C. “As in my case, where Lyme disease is concerned, time is of the essence.”

All the ones I have seen this year, including the one attached to his ear were wood ticks though, so not as much concern about lyme disease with those.

In fact, there was a vaccine for Lyme’s but litigation and fear of big pay-outs to folks who had a bad response to the vaccine led the manufacturer to pull it in from the market. The vaccine is no longer available.

Was that what sidelined you for the camp-out Zuma? Bad reaction to a Lyme Vacine?

has anybody tried taking garlic pills. when i was in Boy Scouts i used to take garlic pills everyday you have to make sure they are 100% garlic. i would take in the beginning 3 tablets a day 2 in the morning and 1 at night after about 1 week or so i would go down to 2 a day 1 in the morning and 1 at night before bed. besides smelling like an Italian restaurant (only when you sweet real bad) the ticks never landed on me at all everybody else would be full of them. now a days i take 2 a day and spray myself and gear with a spray that i cant remember off hand right now but i don’t get any ticks they don’t even land on me. they will fall on my clothes but will not go onto my skin. i even placed on on my skin and it looked like it was on fire and jumped off. anybody else have any home remedies for ticks. let me know i am always interested into new cures for this kinda stuff.

No. I had Lyme’s last year, and quickly got on antibiotics (Cipro), and it was not that big of a deal. It was more scary, than actually a significant problem. Scary because I have seen significant cases of Lyme’s and know that it can be more than the little transient fever that I had.

No, I was sidelined at the campout (and since) by a simple infection in my leg. However, very high fever, and still not really over it, and not back to work yet, and really havent been out of my yard all week, since I have to elevate my leg much of the time.

I agree with Dave of Team Deejay. In the upper midwest, it’s the grassy areas where a lot of these ticks hang out. I jokingly refer to Bong as “Tickville” during the months of May-July because it’s the largest state rec area in the Racine-Kenosha area, but LOTS of other places have ticks as well. They are mostly wood ticks which do not spread Lyme Disease, but I had a couple deer ticks crawling on me in S Kettle Moraine in mid-April.

I’d like to see you out in the moonlight
I’d like to kiss you way back in the sticks
I’d like to walk you through a field of wildflowers
And I’d like to check you for ticks.

Yes, Lancelot and I sing this song and giggle. Checking each other for ticks is a favourite romantic pastime in this household. Thankfully we find very few, but the hunt is so worth it.
