Our county Economic Development Coordinator contacted me. He wants my advice and help (as the “local expert”) to promote geocaching in our county. This is what he said, “From a tourims standpoint we think geocaching is a way to attract additional people to this area and also provide another amenity for existing tourists and residents.”
He is familiar with geocaching and already had these ideas in mind:
1. “hosting a Wisconsin Geocache Association campout.”
2. “doing some type of competive or fun event around geocache– preferrably with some type of support from Garmin or Magellan”
3. “Creating a custom trinket or bug pertaining to the County” or “maybe just numbered keychains with our County website address on them”
4. “procure some GPS units that we could rent out or check out from the Visitors Center to get people exposed to geocaching”
Has anyone here worked with local officials with promoting geocaching in this way? What are the Do’s and Don’ts in this situation? I told him I didn’t think it would be a good idea to be giving rank beginners coords to our caches simply because they wouldn’t know the rules. What if they took a Travel Bug? They wouldn’t know what to do with it.
Any other problems that you may foresee?

Any comments appreciated.
