I’m looking for trade item ideas. I walk up and down the aisles of walmart and never can figure what would be a good trade item at a fair price.
06/11/2006 at 11:39 am #1762685Search the dollar stores.
06/11/2006 at 2:12 pm #1762686It seems there are several cachers that do their shopping at their local Golf course. 😯
06/11/2006 at 2:46 pm #1762687I agree, the Dollar stores are great. I find some of my things at our local Walgreens in the bargin bin, especially after a holiday or season. Found a ton of stuff for a quarter the end of last summer. the other place I shop from is a catalog called Orintal Trading Co. I get their catalogs all the time and order online. click below and it should take ya there… if I did it right LOL

Agreed. Not only can you find some rather nice stuff that you can’t believe only costs a dollar, but you can find things that appeal to just about anyone. Kids, adults, geopets, male or female.
A side question that I always debate… When you buy swag like this for caching, do you remove it from the packaging before stocking your caches or do you just toss it in, blister packs and all?
06/11/2006 at 3:29 pm #1762689What I’m looking for is more like an idea of what items other cachers use as trade items. Or is it easier to ask along with McDonald toys and Golf balls what are some bad trade items.
06/11/2006 at 3:52 pm #1762690I really like to find pins, Harley pins in particular but any one will make my collection.
As my main trade item I have a pin I place in caches (they run about $5 apiece but I got a great deal on them). Also I can place them in almost any cache regardless of size and can throw a few in my pocket as well when I’m traveling light (in fact I always throw a few in my pocket for when I leave my bag in the car).06/11/2006 at 4:35 pm #1762691@Cheesehead Dave wrote:

For me it depends on the packaging it comes in and if that package allows me to fit it IN the cache. Some items are definately OVER package, so then I pull them out. Or I take it out and put it into a zippy lock bag, especially if it might be something that could rust, get stained (i.e. a Beanie Baby) or might be a collectable. Also depends on my mood and if my hands are getting frozen off in sub zero weather. Though, I usualy prep my swag before a cache run. Wihter caching I tend to just sign logs and not trade.
Another side note – many times the contents of a cache is sadly picked over or depleted. That’s when getting a good stock of inexpensive swag helps, so I can take a bag full and leave a number of items and take nothing – Like Lostby7 does. I do that because I think about those sad lil faces 😥 😥 😥 of kids that become disappointed when there is nothing in there.
06/12/2006 at 1:54 am #1762692Here are some of the things we’ve left/found in caches, mostly gotten at dollar stores:
small decks of playing cards, handheld little puzzles, stickers, little compasses, carabeaners, (if good container) individual packets of kleenex, wet wipes, glitter pens, 8-packs of crayons, keychains, matchbox cars, bandaids, and batteries. When shopping for items to take with us, we look for either things for the kids or useful things cachers may need while out on the trails. 😛06/12/2006 at 2:12 am #1762693We use to leave matches and jack knives thinking they were a necessity in the woods. Then we found out that was a big no-no so we cleaned out all the the McD toys around the house. Lately we have been putting quite a few Beanie Babies out there… We have also created stickers with the Geo logo and made stones with our signature logo. Decks of cards from the casino, fancy pencils, matchbox cars, etc. We have taken, tissues, the thing for holding sunglasses around your neck, pins, wine glass markers, toys for our grandson, several things for the handicapped adults we take caching, depends on the day, the weather, the bugs and our moods. Just don’t put anything edible, or that smells edible to animals.
Timberline Echoes06/12/2006 at 7:02 am #1762694I hope no one finds it in bad taste, but lately I have been finding swag at garage sales. Some of it has still been in it’s original packaging and some of it is obviously used, but in good condition. I have found it an affordable option to pick up some things that you can’t find at the dollar store. Where else can you get a whole bag of Mctoys for 25 cents? 😆
06/22/2006 at 7:23 pm #1762695Don’t know if anyone else does or not, but I have saved most of the stuff I have traded for since I started Caching. Got quite the collection of stuff now. Might be an interesting thing to show at an Event sometime…..

I attach a tag with the date, cache name and coordinates to whatever I pick up. I have buckets of treasures to enjoy. -
