I love the use of tree tags and more people are using them as part of an offset cache. Please keep in mind that branches and trunks grow and need a little slack in whatever you use to hang the tag to the tree. Plastic wire tie wraps can be initially installed loosely but anyone finding them can snug them up and make them too tight. I think a good idea for hanging them is braided wire fish line leader. You can get kits that include the sleeves and crimping pliers.

Another novel idea I’ve seen is the use of hose clamps. You need a nut driver or screw driver to change the tightness, so I don’t think anyone is likely to inadvertently snug them up like can be done with a tie-wrap.

Finally a request. Where can I get a punch to make metal tags? I’ve thought of looking for an old Addressograph plate maker but some punches with 0 through 9 would do the job.

Try most any hardware store (not discount mega store). I got a set of numbers a few years ago to lable keys and they weren’t too expensive.

    Steve,
Eliot’s Ace Hardware at the corner of Bluemound and Moorland should have what you need. They have almost everything and at competitive prices. Might also want to try Farm & Fleet, but Eliot’s is probably your best bet. If they don’t have what you’re looking for, thay can probably tell you wher to find it locally.

I purchased a set of metal punches at Menards a number of years ago.

I was trying to make metal address tags to affix to my Chrismas decorations outside.

They worked very poorly for me. I was having a hard time getting the letters to show up.

I even tried pieces of metal cut from soda cans and it wouldnt show up on them either.

It was quite a time consuming process. I got frustrated and returned the punches to Menards and got my money back.
