I recently started playing with the GSAK macro that gives you “paperless” information on Garmin Nuvi GPSrs … if you have a Nuvi and have not tried it, it’s at: http://pilotsnipes.googlepages.com

Any way I decided I’d prefer, on the selector screen, to have the GC#### first, rather than the “Short Name” assigned to each cache, plus be able to tell the cache container size. So basically, I’ve tweaked the macro code to give me results, like this:

    GC11CGC/Tr/Sm/PheasantsForev

In this example, the “Tr” indicates a traditional cache and the “Sm” indicates it’s a small container.

All you need to do is edit the macro (garmin-nuvi-exportgpx.gsk), changing lines 40 and 41 to read this way:

    $waypointnamesmallscreen = “%code/%typ=2/%con=2/%ShortName=7 “
    $waypointnamewidescreen = “%code/%typ=2/%con=2/%ShortName=14 “

Note: This change means I’m not showing if it’s a cache I’ve found already (N or Y), but I typically don’t load caches on my Nuvi that I found already; plus I’ve given up the indicator showing if there’s a travel bug in the cache (* at the end), since that’s typically outdated information any way.

I’ve recently switched to this type of “paperless” caching about a month ago. I think it’s awesome! It only takes a few minutes to load several hundred caches into my Nuvi and I have the tour guide set to alert me when I’m a few blocks from a cache.

“LOSTMomof2” … do you actually use your Nuvi to find the caches … or just to navigate the car?

I have standard handheld GPSr also, so it’s a non-issue for me. But I don’t think I’d feel comfortable carrying a Nuvi in the woods … too fragile looking (especially with the antenna up) and not water-resistant. I could see MAYBE putting the Nuvi in a fanny pack with the antena down to read the text/hint/logs, but not actually approaching ground zero with it operational. But again I have a Palm Pilot also, so another non-issue.
