We’ve been up around Arpin the last couple days, doing what many others are doing, looking for the fun new geoart.  While we both went to school in Stevens Point, we didn’t get over by Arpin.  We’d noticed this huge hill, then found out it’s Powers Bluff. I guess back in the day, Jeremy had a cache there, but it had to be removed when the DNR started policing caches in SNAs more closely. So….no caches there.  But in reading about the place, it was apparently a Native American settlement until the 1920s, and along some of the trails, one can see remains of dance circles.  I hope on one of our trips up that way to find the rest of the caches, we’ll have time to stop and explore this area.  Sounds like it could be a fun spot to snowshoe, too.

What are some things you’ve discovered as a result of traveling along the roads in search of caches?  Things like this that made you say….”I’m going to check that out when I’m not caching!”

There have been a few caches in Powers Bluff, however, because of the significance to the Native American community, the county parks dept. has closed this park to geocaching.

All opinions, comments, and useless drivel I post are mine alone and do not reflect the opinions of the WGA BOD.

Jim, Thanks for that insight.  I knew there had been one there in the past that was removed due to the SNA and figured the historical district had limited other placements.  I’m still really interested in visiting the place.  It surely does stand out from the landscape.  I’m going to sort of request that be my reward for the massive park and grabbing I’ve endured. [:D]  Although stopping to snap a photo of “Mater” on the main drag in Arpin was a nice perk, too.  Didn’t there used to be some kind of whole foods bakery there?  I remember the coop in Point carrying really good bread from Arpin.  I think it was Arpin.  Maybe it was Vesper.  It bites getting old!

Hi T&B and all WGA’ers.  Not quite what you were referring to in your question….but we just returned from a month and a half touring & geocaching in New Mexico.  Absolutely beautiful state.  Before we left I saw pictures of an area that looked “unworldly” and looked up geocaches in the area to find out more.  Found two Earth caches and logged them on Halloween Day…GC1PNHE  Trees, What Trees? and GC1NBCX   Bisti Badlands  Check out the pictures of Bonnie in our logs.  What an incredible place….no trails, just hike around and don’t get lost in the maze of valleys, hoodoos, and hills.  Thanks to geocaching for getting us out to these amazing locations…Wander where there is no Path!!  Hotdogs Off Trail – Bonnie and Jeff

Hey, I think I just mentioned you guys somewhere in a log or post or something!  That’s kind of what I was getting at….we try to choose our caching destinations based on what looks like interesting things to explore…and sometimes we find other things along the way that may or may not have caches, but deserve a good look.

New Mexico is one place I’ve wanted to visit, just to see things like that.  My parents were down there years back visiting other old fogies 😉 and commented that it felt so different from the landscape they knew, they could have been on the moon.  One of these days.
