Groundspeak has updated the cache hiding guidelines to replace the old version which has been in place since 11/05.
A summary of the changes can be found here. Be sure to read the post afterwards regarding additional cache waypoints.
02/22/2007 at 4:12 am #1770585Thanks for pointing this out Dave ………….
03/18/2008 at 1:49 pm #1770586Regarding the summary, does anyone have a reading on addition of fire tacks to live trees for placement of night caches? Also, would it be acceptable to drill holes in down and dead trees or branches for insertion of a nano or micro waypoint or final?
03/19/2008 at 4:03 pm #1770587Remember that the guidelines forbid any kind of defacement, including painting or writing, using screws in trees, drilling, digging holes, etc. Tacks and staples are kind of “on the edge” in that usually a tackhole would have little or no effect on any kind of tree. The key is that anything you do must be easily removable (either by you or the land manager). Note also that we can make exceptions if you have EXPLICIT permission from the landowner, so if you want to make your garage door a waypoint and paint the coordinates in 2 foot high letters, that is ok.
03/19/2008 at 8:27 pm #1770588Does this mean if there is something already out there with a screw that it needs to be refitted some other way asap?
03/19/2008 at 9:21 pm #1770589Good Point! I have a cache in Racine that is bolted to a brick wall. Anchor bolts were required.
I got explicit permission to do so.
03/20/2008 at 2:36 pm #1770590I have an upcoming cache where I’d like to put a cache in a concrete wall, and cover it with something. This concrete wall already has almost the perfect hole in it, but I wanted to make it just a bit bigger so the custom container will fit. The hole now is about 1 1/4″ and would need to be about 1 3/8″. The wall is on public property, technically has something already covering the hole, and if the cache was ever removed, you would in no way ever notice the hole, just as you cannot at this point.
Any idea if this one would fly?
03/20/2008 at 2:48 pm #1770591Give me the coords and describe the container Jay, I’ll be glad to check this one out for you 😈
03/20/2008 at 2:52 pm #1770592You already know. You’ve had a cache near it before.

In theory, no. You cannot “modify the landscape” without permission to do so. Of course, as reviewers, we would never know if you did something like this. This is an “honor system” sort of thing.

It all depends on whether you want to follow the guidelines or not. If no one complains about it, there won’t be any issues. If another cacher or the landowner complains, it would probably be archived. As reviewers, we only revisit geocaches when they are moved or when complaints are lodged.

Nope sorry. It would have made an awesome cache, maybe even the best (or worst) NEMESIS yet. But I don’t want to go against the guidelines.
