09/28/2010 at 11:26 pm #1936611I have a Delorme PN-40 and 60 and love them. You can get a PN-40 at Amazon for $232 now. It is well worth it and you have all the maps, auto routing and a fast easy way to load caches.
Thanks09/29/2010 at 2:16 am #1936612I am eagerly awaiting the release of the new Magellen Explorist 510/610/710 series. Touch screen like the Garmins but also two programable hard buttons. No WheriGo but since that’s Garmins baby, it won’t be missed.
Would like to know if the geocache files are larger than the 200 cache limit on the old eXplorists.
the price range looks to be $350-$450-$550 as the maps and things are added in the higher series numbers. To me, the 610 is the very happy medium. apparently they are pre-orderable on Amazon with release in October/NovemberDisclaimer : Always answering to a higher power.

09/29/2010 at 1:54 pm #1936614I got to see one of the new garmin 62 series the other day, when I get in a position to upgrade I’m going to be hard pressed not to upgrade my 60cx to its new 62 counterpart. Nice unit!
09/29/2010 at 1:57 pm #1936615I’m still using my original etrex but have purchased on iPod Touch to use as my paperless device. It causes me to carry 2 devices, but the Touch is so versatile in that I can do other things with it also (i.e. games, music, productivity apps, etc.) I also looked it as a cheaper option than buying a new GPSr with all kinds of bells / whistles.

I also use this option as well and love it. I’ve got the Geosphere app and can log my caches on it and then upload the field notes when I’m done.
09/30/2010 at 4:53 pm #1936618I’d second a vote for the Garmin 62 or the classic 60CSx or 60Cx. Tried and true technology, outstanding customer service, and lots of locals to give assistance if needed.
The Delormes are probably technically superior (at least for the price) but I have been very happy with my Garmins, so I am not likely to switch. Sometimes a company earns your loyalty through good customer service and support, along with quality devices.
I can’t speak for the quality of the new Magellans, but I have not heard about any improvements on their technical support/customer service (which is somewhat below the customer service you will receive from the IRS or an HMO.) You can talk to anyone who currently owns a Magellan. They might love their device, but if they ever have to deal with a company for service, they swear they will never deal with them again. This is a deal breaker for me.
