Or “pine” when it is a spruce, balsam, cedar… Fun when they mix up popple and birch too… if you don’t know… don’t guess….
TE08/11/2009 at 2:57 am #1912262One of the few puzzles I own is built around this idea. See GC184QB. And yes, this is a huge hint on how to solve the puzzle.

08/11/2009 at 3:40 am #1912263I wouldn’t say that this is a “worst” hint, but was for a wonderful cache we did on a “mountain” in the middle of a lake. The cache is GC1776 (placed 8/19/2001 – so that explains the longer hint) located in Arkansas, the hint will give you writers cramp to decrypt:
Additional Hints: “BE sure to start at the trailhead located at 35′ 33.568 N 92′ 15.678 W ALT=155m. This is what geocaching is all about so check those maps and plan your trip before you go! You will not be able to drive your car directly to the trailhead by following your GPS signal! You’ll need some special equipment to get to the trailhead. There are two areas very near the site where you can rent the equipment you need (if you don’t already have it) or you can use your “golden personalities” to bum a ride from a local (like we did on our first trip). Creative geocachers might think of other ways of approaching the trail head, of course that is most of the fun!
We did the trail in water boots, but you will want to be sure to take your tennis or hiking shoes to get the most enjoyment out of the walk. The easy trail loops around the bluffs and is a beautiful walk. If you have time be sure to take it. If you are in a hurry, you will want to take the left trail when it splits and then start looking for the trail ‘up’ on the right soon there after. Although I thought this was one of the best jobs the park service has done working the steps and rails into the environment while still providing good access for most people, you will want to allow time for the trip due to the quick change in altitude. Anyone in fairly normal shape should be able to make the climb up if they take their time. Seats and ‘rest areas’ are provided all along the way.
The cache is located just off the main trail on top. Look for some older growth trees and a few cactus patches. Be careful not to trample the plants and grasses if you can… there are several people/animal paths to follow through the ‘good stuff.’ It is hidden under a large rock, in a natural recess – no digging required. Replace the rocks so the cache remains in place. Gravity and water drainage will be attempting to carry our cache back down the hill, so your cooperation is appreciated.”
…in the good ole early days of geocaching….
08/11/2009 at 5:42 am #1912264We did a cache today in Praire DuChien that had me going, pulled in at the local veteran’s memorial and there is a tank sitting there. Decide to look at the gps and was relieved to see that the cache wasn’t near it (this time for once) but the hint after we found the cache was…. Magnetic That would have caused a stroke on me if it was on the tank.
08/11/2009 at 3:38 pm #1912265How about “right side” on a tank? Is that from the driver’s position or looking at it as if it may run you over?????

TEI think it means right as in “correct.” You know, you need to be on the correct side of the tank in order to find the cache? 😆
You do letterboxing, right? This is a perpetual frustration–people who use relative rather than cardinal directions!

TELet me guess, TE. you did the tank in Crivitz? That was a tough one that baffled a couple of us local cachers.
