I just noticed the recently added Attributes and was looking through the new icons when I noticed the “UV Light” attribute.

I know I don’t get out much, but how many “blacklight” only findable caches are out there that it would warrant it’s own icon?

I do like some of the new ones, particularly the distance set. I think the puzzle icons could have used a little pier review to cover all bases, but in general I do appreciate the effort to develop some new classifications to assist placers and finders in determining just what they are in for when they set out to find a cache.

Personally, I’m going to hold off a little bit to see if these get modified any further before doing my own cache review to add new attributes. It’s a monumental task, but I know the addition of some of these new icons will be liked by many s|s cache seakers.

It also gives me a whole new set of icons to use playfully as I am want to do on some listings 😉

What’s your impression of the new Attributes? Weigh in cache creators…

I did a UV light required one at the Cash Bash and I own one that requires one. I know there are a TON of them in california, I did a few when I was out there.

I used a few of the new ones last night when creating a new puzzle, and I like the changes for the most part.

Going through the first 10 or so caches I own, I’ve noticed that somehow, my attributes have been picked for me. For instance, Match Head states its a medium hike, and so does Fish Hook. Both are true, but I didn’t put that attribute in.

Another good example is a cache I adopted from a cacher who passed away. There are 7 attributes there now that were not there before. All of them x-out attributes, like no rest rooms and no stroller access.

In another case, I’ve noticed an attribute or two missing. It’s going to take a while to go through them all and fix the errors. Not sure I should start now though, in case it changes again? Then again, I don’t want cachers misdirected.

Ooh.. a park and grab attribute!

I never noticed they added so many new ones out there. Thanks s|s for pointing it out.

Perhaps they should have made the hike distance one’s “bilingual” for us Americans who don’t think in KM’s…

Some nice new additions to the attribute list.

I love the P&G attribute…..and agree on the KM thing…..it’s bad enough they race the Tour de France in kilometers…I always have to convert it to find out if they really are going fast up those mountains…if everyone would just play nice and use the American system of measurements I wouldn’t be confused all the time or find myself with two sets of tools.

I thought you would be an expert at that from doing bike races? Just multiply everything by .6, close enough for government work, en so?

I raced in MPH…and when I did so it was informal racing. Drives me crazy hearing the kph stuff when watching European bike racing….

Also I did note that some of my caches too had icons added to the pages that I did not put there…I wonder how/why that happened.

That would explain it. I haven’t done any that require UV but have one on the workbench that does. Just out of curiosity, of the one’s you’ve done, are you using UV to read UV reactive ink or are there other UV elements I’m not aware of.

I guess I’m still curious why there’s a whole category. We also now have a “Night Cache” attribute and a “Flashlight Required”. With the “UV Light” I think we’ve got the night caches covered…

As far as the Auto-assigned Attributes, I am not AT ALL happy about this new situation, PERIOD. If our caches were going to be modified, should we not have had an opportunity to OPT out or at least have been forwarned? I didn’t see this until you pointed it out, TyeDyeSkyGuy, and I am now anticipating a #)(&%^storm from cache creators who specifically set Attributes to match their cache listings.

Now I have to go through 150+ listings and remove all of those attributes I don’t want and replace the ones that were pulled? Are you kidding me? That’s probably 4-5 hours worth of work that I don’t have, WTF! Whose brilliant idea was that?[/b]

We can think of one of yours that we wanted to use this tool on. Might have made it ‘whiter and brighter’, or ‘greener and meaner.’ Be aware that most cat owners already have these in their bag of search tricks (hack-ack!). Unsettling in a cheap motel, though. 😳

UV Ink and paint break down and quit being effective very very quickly if exposed to sunlight. I used the ink to write on things that are in the dark all of the time, like the inside of an ammo can. For anything else that I wanted to react to the UV light I used Sculpey oven bake UV reactive polymer clay, which will flouresce to UV light even if it has been exposed to the elements for years. If you would like to discuss some of the Tricks I have seen with UV caches, shoot me a message.

I looked at a sampling of my caches and didn’t see any “auto” attributes. They all looked like one’s I would have set (or the original owner would have set). That would be rather odd four Groundspeak to automatically apply attributes to caches.

Even better than the P&G attribute is the “not P&G”. I used this one to add some irony/humor to one of my sons caches.

Well, either it was a fluke or someone at GS realized what was going on and remedied it as soon as it was brought to thier attention. Earlier today I opened a few in my Great Story series and they all had a set of new attributes applied, all with “not required” line through them. It was very weird!

But, I see now that everything appears to be normal. So everyone can simply go back to caching…

do not adjust your television set, you are not in control…

How about someone explaining the differences between these:
      Recommended at night
      Night Cache

      Is there a difference?

I can understand a “Flashlight Required” as it could be a cave, a dangerous hollow tree (Alphabet Soup – G is for … – T&B log), etc. In other words a flashlight might be needed for a non-night cache.

And how about putting UV required in the “Special Tools Required” category? Wouldn’t that cover it? If the CO wants to elaborate on special tools that would be there option.

      #1934580

I would say that recommended at night is for like a haunted theme, or maybe a scenic view like Grandad’s Bluff.
To me the night cache is straight a cache with firetacks or made to be found at night.

Last weekend I found WRR 33 – Holy Hill View GC28V4H You could find it during the day, and it’s probably a nice view from there, but I found it at night and it was spectacular. If this cache were mine I would put a Recommended at Night attribute on this one.

All opinions, comments, and useless drivel I post are mine alone and do not reflect the opinions of the WGA BOD.
