Wow:!:, I THINK it’s a good thing, but I hope they limit it. Otherwise virtuals could some day become more commonplace than traditionals. Perhaps limit virtuals to one placement per year per member, or placement by premium members only, or historical/newsworthy/’touristy” places only. Then there’s the issue of the CO dropping out; how would they be monitored. In any case, it’s an exciting prospect, and I look forward to a limited number of new virtuals in the near future.

Might be nice to see a different symbol used: Old virts vs. new virts.

I don’t really follow the GC forum closely – it gets too geeky/purist for me most times – what was the rationale for eliminating virtuals – too “cheap”?

I don’t have any insider information on the upcoming rules, but I can speculate on how this will be controlled. Most likely, there will be a LOT of scrutiny with regard to “Could you place a cache somewhere in the immediate area?” and “What is special about this area?” This would tend to exclude most historical markers, “count the steps on the fire tower”, “get the number off the parking lot sign”, and other generic virtuals. Think similar rules to Earthcaches without the need to stick with geology.

I think it a great idea. This sport is big enough to support a lot of different types of caches. Do/participate in the ones you want to do and ignore the rest.

I find it interesting that one of the purported reasons for eliminating ALRs on physical caches was that it got away from the core purpose of geocaching, which is apparently finding Tupperware in a bush.

I guess when it’s your sandbox, you can rake it any way you want.

        +1

-I’m still pissed (yes pissed) about the way ALRs were banned and how ECs got the short end of the stick with photo requirements being made optional. Good luck with the new Virts…

The cynic in me says this is nothing more than a way to get find counts even higher…

But look at the evidence…power trails used to be verboten, now they are celebrated. No more ALRs. Changes to EC rules.

But it appears to be what the majority wants…so be it! I’m sure if they could figure out a way to eliminate puzzles they would do it too.

Everyone has a type of cache they don’t like to do. I hate puzzle caches, so guess what I don’t do them. Virtuals are awesome and I can’t wait for them to return.

Actually, it seems these are on there way back to “verboten”. At least the largest ones.

And you know what surprises you find from the neighborhood cats when you rake it. 😆

I’m actually excited and disturbed (if that’s possible). On the upside – I’ve liked the virtuals (and earthcaches) that I’ve done because most of them have been family friendly, have educated me in some way, and have taken me places I wouldn’t normally have gone (i.e. the whole point of geocaching in my opinion). I’m also a puzzle lover my style has always been to try and do the cache as intended.

On the downside? Well armchair logging should sum it up. That’s disturbing to me, but it shouldn’t be (or should it?).

If virtuals have some rigor to them, then I’m all for it. If it’s going to become what waymarking has become, then they can skip the whole concept in my opinion.

Only cuz they were made to take them down

I am excited to see them back. Some of my favorite caches are virts in the Washtington DC/ Gettysburg area. I think it would be neat to have a new symbol ( I am still hoping to get all Virts in Wisconsin someday ) I like the idea of Eathcache requirements with Virts
