i always felt that since earthcaches dealt with geology, the history aspect could be covered by virtuals in some way. just 1 mans opinion.

I just hope that whatever form they take they don’t become “guard rail” types – one on every corner in meaningless locations that highlight/showcase nothing of worth.

Sorta describes many geocaches out there today. Just one man’s opinion.

IMHO I would like to see a return of virts with some limitations of course… I’ve had a memorial in mind for as many years as I’ve been caching but the location doesn’t really support a traditional, mystery, or earthcache… I’ve been crossing my fingers that there would be a return to virts so that I can place one to a local fallen hero…

hopefully our reviewers will keep the standards high, even if groundspeak says they can highlight a guardrail, I would hope they don’t allow it

This is a great idea for a virtual. There’s a fallen hero in the cemetery near us who I knew personally. This would be a great way to have a non-intrusive WSQ cache.

even a virt in a cemetery will need to have an OK from the land manager

I’m not aware of the rules for virtuals, but I don’t believe the current restrictions for WSQ require land manager permission if a puzzle or multi is located outside the cemetery but uses information from inside the cemetery (just my understanding, but I could be wrong in the interpretation of the recent WSQ changes).

And yet an physical cache can highlight a guardrail. Sorry, I’ll stop now.

That’s great news! I think Virtuals are fun.

There are some really nice guard rails out there…some have the buttress end, others go right to the ground. You can even find a few of the old cut off ones that are great to tbone a car into. Lots of interesting stuff for the discerning cacher.

Should be interesting to see what comes of it. In thinking about my caches found so far this year, my favorite 2 finds of the year are both virts: GC593E and GC868. Both were overlooks along the Lewis and Clark trail, with great views of the Missouri River. So, yeah, virts done right can be great caches. (On the other side though, both of these were in places a physical could be located, with a little more effort, both by the placer and the finder.)

I think virts appeal to the type of cacher who the main goal is to find great places. Some of us are not so interested in making caching a constant struggle. Understandably, virts tend to not appeal to those who prefer to make caching a struggle either by figuring out puzzles or looking for cleverly concealed micros.

I think this is a good point. We are thinking of doing a trip out west with the family this summer and the first things I looked for were EC / virtuals. My family doesn’t share the same “find it” drive that I do, but an educational stop / great view appeals to all of us. This is what the “game” is about to our family and “your mileage may vary”.

I’m excited for virtuals to come back as I enjoy the historical aspect of them. Plus since I’m out with the kids caching generally, it’s always nice to not have a nasty bushwhack through thorns for a smiley.
