Visiting from Ohio

We are a family of four from near Dayton,Ohio and will be visiting family during the weekend of August 4-7 and would like some suggestions on family/kid friendly caches in the Madison to Lodi area.

Hello boydfamily!

Some of my suggestions would be dependent on whether you are familiar with Madison and the driving around Madison. If you’re not, there are some I just wouldn’t bother sending you to. 😉

With that said, I’ll make two lists – one for caches in/around Lodi that I like, and ones in Madison that I like. But keep in mind, there are a few caches in the area I haven’t done, so there might still be some good ones out there I don’t mention as well.

Lodi area caches:

GC5C4C – Rockin’ & Rollin’ on Gibraltar (it’s a hike up a steep hill, but it’s paved! If your kids are old enough to stay away from the edges of the rocks, this place has BEAUTIFUL views.)

GC859F – Over the Tracks – a neat little virtual.

GCQKMM – Lady of the Pines – neat area where the cache is at! One of those “I never would’ve seen this if it weren’t for geocaching” things.

GCHBAJ – Mackenzie’s Charm – one of my favorite areas, The Mackenzie Environmental Education Center.

GC80AE – Can You Par Frey’s Glen? – a virtual I actually haven’t done yet but it is on my list of *must do’s*! I hear it’s GORGEOUS.

GC9E5E – Dr. Evermor and Lady Eleanor – this is about 12 miles west-ish of Lodi, south of Baraboo. It would be well worth the detour. It’s on my list of top 5 caches ever.

Madison area caches – If you want to see downtown/campus, I’d recommend these:

GC8406 – What the Honest Man Sees – a virtual that will take you to a prominent spot on campus.

GC3850 – Observation Point – another campus virtual with a pretty view.

GCC1BB – Say Cheese! – a webcam cache on campus.

GC22B8 – Training Camp – a neat multi that is challenging for the brain.

Any “Leopold Legacy” cache (there’s 12 total – one named for each month) is a good choice. They are nice hikes to gorgeous areas and have a nice ammo box at the end. 😀

Also, any “FoLLoW the Leader” cache is neat too. They take you to a Frank Lloyd Wright building in the city.

This is just a starter list. Others might have other recommendations to add as well! This is a great area to cache in.

I can’t help you on Madison area caches, but I can offer my “Welcome to Wisconsin” to a fellow Ohioan.

I spent slightly less than half my life in the Cleveland area. If you’re ever in the Eau Claire area of Wisconsin, let me know. (geocaching.com name bnb)

I agree the “Dr. Evermor and Lady Eleanor ” cache is worth seeing, even if you don’t get to have tea with him. I was there on a cold October afternoon. I did get to meet Dr. Evermor, but he stayed in his car to keep warm. He was very friendly and even gave me a current newspaper that had an article about him in it. A fascinating place.
