Looking at those recent logs you see all kinds of things. Apparently someone has created a profile to go through and recommend maintenance for caches all over. It might even be warranted in many cases. Their notes on the cache page are worded much in the tone of a reviewer’s note.
Interesting stuff. Who remembers “Lycoperdon” a few years back that was requesting archives? It was kind of a fun name. More fun than “Volunteer Cleanup.” Either way, it’s a public service to allow the rest of us who hate posting that stuff to continue to avoid it, LOL
10/29/2015 at 6:40 pm #2044096I got the impression this is an organized effort to separate these posts from the normal reviewer posts. It would be hard for someone from the general membership to search out the caches that needed the posts that were made today. This way “Volunteer Cleanup” will get the heat from the disgruntled CO’s. Just my guess.
10/29/2015 at 6:59 pm #2044097Could be a way for “someone” to pre-screen caches for WisKid, who is the one who usually does reviewer disabling and archiving of caches. Could be a good job for a newbie reviewer…
10/29/2015 at 7:04 pm #2044098Or for a retiring reviewer…

11/01/2015 at 8:25 am #2044166I’m wondering how this person might post on PMO caches when s/he is not a Premium Member.

11/02/2015 at 11:59 am #2044188So perhaps it is a reviewer in training or one in retirement, which would explain “special privileges” granted to a non-premium member. If it helps to clean things up for us, it’s great, no matter who it is.
11/02/2015 at 1:42 pm #2044190Just to confirm….Johnny Waypoint has nothing to do with these events.

Good to see you back here Gary. If you find out the story behind Otis (“Volunteer Cleanup”), can you let us all know?

Looks like Groundspeak has yet another initiative to help in this area.<strong class=”bbc”>Logged by: Volunteer Cleanup

Hi, there! It looks like this geocache might be missing. There is a string of DNFs and no one has found it in more than a year. As the owner, there are a number of things you can do.
If you know the cache is still there and in good working order, write a note to say so
If you know or suspect that the cache is missing, temporarily disable it until you can perform maintenance
If you aren’t sure whether the cache is still there, write a note to say when you’ll check on it
If you no longer plan to maintain this cache, you can archive it or offer to have another geocacher adopt it
Thank you for placing this cache. The time and trouble you’ve invested are a great way to contribute back to the hobby. By keeping the cache in good repair and keeping the listing up to date, you’ll be doing even more to keep the game fun for others in the local geocaching community. This is not an official “initiative” by Geocaching HQ or by the Community Volunteer Reviewers.
so it looks like “Otis” is busting Illinois caches too. But from the grapevine, sounds like the account was locked out.
the plot thickens…

11/02/2015 at 9:37 pm #2044204I can confirm that this account has been locked, so I guess Groundspeak has taken notice.
11/05/2015 at 9:58 pm #2044298Normally I don’t mind members of the local caching community looking over each other’s caches. However, it’s normally done in some sort of official manner through a local caching association (think Lonely Cache Game or cache rescue, among other things) or between the cachers involved. What was fishy about this account called “Volunteer Cleanup” is that this account wasn’t a reviewer or a lackey, not even a premium member either. It looks like they were looking through caches in Illinois as well.

11/08/2015 at 7:33 pm #2044350It is fine to have some sort of system like this but difficulty would have to come into play. The dawn of Skynet is imminent!
