Want to BUY Delorme Street Atlas

I’m very interested in finding out. . . .

1) Has anybody used Delorme’s Street Atlas program?

2) Have you used it in your PDA to put maps into that device?

3) Have you used it to work with waypoints in your GPS?

4) anybody have a copy of Street Atlas 2006 or 2007 for sale?

I’m asking because my version of Mapsource is starting to show its age. I go places where there are roads but they don’t show up in my mapping program or GPS. I also am interested in getting maps loaded into my PDA. Its color screen is much larger than my Rino so the maps would be much more usable.

Any info very appreciated.

I use SA 2006 for several purposes. It does a good job of creating routes with multiple stops (or manual route decision). It is also good for creating files of coordinates “spots marked on the map”. (I typically do this with highway exits.)

That said, I don’t think it is a requirement unless you are a fairly advanced user. It will not accept GPX or LOC files, so you have to use another program to create files for SA. (GpsBabel works fine for this.) It will send waypoints (or routes) to your GPS, but you don’t have a lot of control. Other people use Streets and Trips, which I have to believe is better and easier to use, but I don’t have any significant experience with that.

For waypoint management and route visualization, I highly recommend GSAK, which is a full featured geocaching database. You can use this to map individual points on a wide variety of mapping sites or a set of points in Google Earth or Google Maps. It has a bit of a learning curve, but once you get used to it, you won’t be satisfied with anything else. It is shareware, and if you like it, the cost is only $20.

Oh I do use GSAK for waypoint management. It works beautifully. Combined with Cachemate it works nicely to get info to/from my PDA.

What I’m looking for now is a newer mapping program that . . . .

1) is more up-to-date than my current version of Mapsource
2) is affordable
3) can put maps on my PDA (it’s color and a bigger screen than my GPS)
4) can work with a bluetooth GPS (eventually)

I don’t know that I’d actually be using this combo for caching much. The PDA is not as tough as my Rino so I think the Rino would still be the one I’d use for in-woods navigation. What I’m mostly looking to do is have a good in-car navigation setup.

With SA 2006, you need to purchase the Palm version to use it on your Palm, as well as the PC version. SA 2007 appears to include all the necessary software in one package, but I don’t own it. (I don’t use this, as my Palm is an old M100 I bought for $7 on Ebay, and it can barely hold all the cache descriptions I carry with me.) As far as I can tell, S&T does NOT work with the Palm OS, only Pocket PC.

If I were you, I would find someone already using the SA 2007 before I bought it. While the Delorme maps are pretty good, the software in version 2006 is a little awkward to use and not very “export” friendly. The good news is that learning to use this software effectively will make you a GPSBabel expert!

I’ve just gotten Street Atlas 2007, but haven’t had much time to play around with it yet. As Team Deejay mentioned, with the 2006 version you need to buy an additional PDA piece, but that is now included in SA2007. I was able to install it onto my PDA (Palm Z22) and download handheld maps that came with SA2007. I have not been able to create my own map and download that to my PDA. I tried for a while but didn’t spend a lot of time on it. If downloading you own personal maps to your PDA is important to you I’d verify that it can be done before purchasing the product.

I might have SA 2006 to give you, if I can find where I put the original disks. If you’re still interested I’ll see if I can dig them up.

I have uses delorme street atlas for the last 5 years now. Love it! Well worth the cost at best buy(about 100). Plus if you purchase the program some will have a gps in them. Again well worth it. In fact this is how we started caching with a laptop and gps. Found about 20 caches before I got tired of carrying the laptop.

We use gsak as a our cache source. From there I import a draw file to delorme. Now I have all links and locations in delorme for caches. If you have a wireless internet you can access the cache page on the road by simply clicking on the link in Delorme.

Delorme does have the ability to upload to palms. I have not played with that function as my palm will not sync with my new computer. (New toys that require technical help!)

I’ve got a copy of SA 2007 coming now.
Another cacher ended up with 2 copies (he bought a copy, then it came bundled with a piece of equipment). So I’m buying that copy from him.

A big thanks to all who sent me PM’s on this. I appreciate the responses and the info on Delorme’s product. Now that I have it coming, though, we can go ahead and let this thread die off into the oblivion of Internet Conversations. (I believe that’s very near the Island of Misfit Toys if I’m not mistaken) 🙂
