Well, just like it happened back at 9/11, the rumors of GPS degredation via Selective Availability are starting again. I just posted to the Great Plains Geocaching group the information below, thought I’d post it here before worries start. For your reading pleasure:

    Greetings from Wisconsin!

The Global Positioning System is run by the IGEB, the Interagency GPS Executive Board. This is posted on their web site:

“GPS Selective Availability (SA) has not been used since its deactivation by the President on May 1, 2000. At that time, the United States Government stated that it has no intent to ever use SA again. There has been no change in this policy.”
    http://www.igeb.gov/sa.shtml

The United States Coast Guard Navigation Center is chartered by the IGEB to disseminate news and annuncements. They have no notices contrary to the above statement.

The actual group that perform the day to day operation of the GPS is the 2d Space Operations Squadron (2 SOPS) at Schriever AFB. Their site posts no contrary information to the above statement.

The backup operations center for Schriever is the Department Of Defence’s GPS Support Center located at Peterson AFB. Their current advisories do not contradict the above statement.

Please note that casual surfing of the above two sites is not encouraged.

There you have it… I see no reason whatsoever to believe that SA will be re-enabled. But if you want to keep on top of the matter, just monitor the site I’ve provided above.

Well, I certainly hope it doesn’t come to that. I just was directed to an article at spacedaily.com concerning the degrading of signals:

These are however, fears not facts. So lets hope they just stay a fear

Actually, the reason I posted the official position and sites above was to prevent any fears of SA being re-enabled.

IMHO, there is no grounds whatsoever to have any concerns over this matter.

Actually, I would say that if this is something that the govt. felt it had to to in order to enhance the war effort, I’m all for it… On a TEMPORARY basis only that is…

Call me nuts, but lets get this thing over with..
