Them woodland critters seem to be out in full force this this spring.
Last night I was out in the woods with my 3 Geo-Pups. My 2 oldest are on shock collars. The dogs(labs) run around like idiots after chipmunks and the little birds an the occasional grouse. Well, my oldest Abby and youngest Ben came a across a cute little baby…..Porcupine!!! Abby got the brunt of it and got quills in her chin and the roof of her mouth. Ben got just a few in the underside of his chin. $250 later the pups doing fine but they did have to drug up Abby to remove the quills from her mouth.
They charge by the MINUTE! I never saw the baby pine cushion and of course I was far as I could be from the truck. On Saturday, #2 lab Rusty found a BIG porcupine underneath a rock. I saw it the same time Rusty did. Had to pull out just one quill. And then skunks are out too! I have seen a few but have not have any interaction with them. But of course Abby found a dead one and had to roll all over it. She still had a faint skunk smell when she gets wet.So just keep an eye on your geo-mutts cuz those after hour visits to the vet are not cheap and can ruin a weekend of caching pretty fast.
04/30/2008 at 7:16 pm #1888527🙁 Aw, your poor geodogs! Hope they are better soon. I guess I never thought about it, I was always more worried about tics or something, never even considered a porcupine or skunk. Thanks for the warning, my geodog and I will definitely be more careful!
04/30/2008 at 7:24 pm #1888528I’m sorry the pups got hurt! 😥 but if you really want to see what a baby pincushion looks like… look to the left. It’s a baby hedgehog! Now isn’t that cute?!?!?! 😀
04/30/2008 at 8:12 pm #1888529Thanks for the heads up! I roam with a Pack and would hate to see one of them get hurt. Do you think the critters are more prevalent this year or have we just gotten lucky thus far?? Sorry to hear about your pups.

I hear that, 4 weeks ago we were walking our dogs at the local park. We ran into our neighbor who had her 3 goldens with her. The five of them took off into the woods to play and came about about 5 minutes later carrying 3 opossums. Forunately, the opossum were playing dead. Good thing too, I have seen a baby opossum bite a leg bone from a chicken in half like it was a potato chip.
We made them drop them. One of the dogs even tried to roll on it. Fortunately, they had wandered off on our return trip to the cars.

I think it’s just that time of year. The vet said that we were her 5th case is 2 weeks. I have started seeing more and more porcupines in the last 2 years thou. I’m sure they have a cycle just like everything else. When my grandfather was a State Forester, he carried a little .22 revolver to shoot porcupines. That was back in the 50’s and 60’s. Then they introduced fishers and that cut them back a ways.
