On GC.com, the watch list used to hold 100 items for unpaid members. Suddenly today it’s down to 50 items on the watch list. I couldn’t find any notification or explanation, although I’m fairly clever and know it’s probably due to server capacity issues. But part of me wonders if they are just trying to drum up a bit more paying business.

Anyone else stumble upon this or know anything about it?
03/23/2004 at 2:27 pm #1746513Funny that you mention that, because I just noticed a bunch of new features in my premium membership, including expanded watch lists.
My guess is they are limiting server space for the freebies, in preference for expanding the paid memberships.
Here is a list of member features:
quote:
Pocket Query Generator
The Pocket Query Generator allows you to create custom geocache queries and have them emailed to you on a daily or weekly basis. You can also run these queries on the “seek a cache” page as a customized search query. Check the supported software applications page for updates on existing and new software that can take advantage of Pocket Queries.
Geocaching Maps
When logged in you can pan, zoom and identify caches from any point on the planet. It’s an easy way to visualize all the local caches and quickly pinpoint the area of interest. Geocaches you have found are listed with checkboxes, and caches will have a travel bug icon if one has been placed in the cache.
Unlimited Watch Lists
You can add as many geocaches and Travel Bugs to your watch list. When a travel bug or geocache is logged you will receive an email with a copy of the log.
Member-Only CachesSome caches are only available to premium members. This has been a request of many geocachers who want to put more energy into designing a cache for dedicated geocachers. As the cache owner, you can make any of your caches “subscriber only,” so folks will need a subscription to seek it out. (Note: member only caches may not be any better than public geocaches. Each cache is managed by their cache owner.)
Change your forum title
If you’re a more active user in the forums, you can change your forum title from the generic “Geocacher” to something else.
You are the *first* to see new features
Occasionally new features will become available before the general public can see them. Be the first to play with new gaming concepts before everyone else.
New Features in the works!
We’re always working on new features for Premium Members. Here are a few items of interest that have not been implemented (yet):
Download individual listings to GPX – You will soon have the ability to click on a link to download a cache page directly to GPX format. GPX files contain all the information on the cache page which can be read by applications that support this file format.
Multiple Lists – Many members have been asking for multiple lists in addition to the watch lists. You’ll be able to create your own custom lists like “My favorite caches” or “Caches I want to find.” You’ll also be able to receive these lists as Pocket Queries.
Immediate new cache notification – When a new cache becomes available in your area, you will be immediately notified by email. You will be able to choose how far you want to be from a cache to be notified it is available.
Lots of good stuff for premium membership. I still think it’s a deal for $30.00/year.

03/23/2004 at 11:11 pm #1746514For all I get out of geocaching, I gladly pay the minimal fee requested by GC.com… Even if I didn’t get out and cache, just the amount of time I spend reading posts, checking out maps, reading about benchmarks, use the forum, etc… I think of it as a magazine subscription…with unlimited reading potential!!!
03/24/2004 at 1:00 am #1746515So if I don’t have a PDA, would these “Pocket Queries” do anything for me? (I’m obviously not the *techno-geek* in the family, lol.)

Well, you could load them into a laptop 😉

03/24/2004 at 1:45 am #1746517If you are on a pokey old dial-up connection, having the pocket queries on your pc would allow you to look over all the cache pages without going online. If you are going to a certain area to cache, it is also handy to have pocket queries covering those areas, as you could sort the ones you want to hit in various ways.
If your gonna be serious about caching- I recommend getting a Palm Pilot. Just wait until you see us at the campout beaming all the waypoint information over the infra-red connection.
03/24/2004 at 3:44 am #1746518Ooohh!!! I found one area where I’m not in a techno-void!!! We actually have cable modem connection. I can’t imagine EVER going back to dial up! (And to think I remember the days when a 28,8 modem was soooooo fast!!! LOLOL!!!)
But I don’t have a laptop….
Maybe I can ask for a Palm Pilot for my birthday.
03/24/2004 at 11:11 pm #1746519Many young people don’t believe me when I tell them about my first years of computing. I started with a 3,600 bps modem and saved data to a standard audio cassette with an old-fashioned tape recorder. After that came the 8″ floppy drive.
Maybe I am a computer geek.

I thought you were going to say that’s what you’re using now. I remember learning on a “Pet” brand computer with the cassette drive. I remember how cool the 8″ floppy was when it came out. I also recall writing a program to make a word flash on the screen. That’s still the only program I ever wrote

03/25/2004 at 5:11 am #1746522At my first newspaper job back in ’76 (1976 that is) we got a new computerized word processor that outputted to paper punch tape, which we then carried over to the typesetting machine. We thought it was a whole new world.
03/25/2004 at 6:36 pm #17465231976 was a whole new world for us. Thats the year we were born!
03/25/2004 at 7:22 pm #1746524First modem was a 1,200 bps deal…. No web pages – you had to go to BBS’s and dial them all seperately. ARGH!!!!
03/25/2004 at 9:45 pm #1746525Well I’m not sure how this thread digressed to this point, but…..
The first [early ’70’s] computer I had the pleasure of finger poken was a Linc 100 [PDP-8] clone. it had a 1k magnetic core memory and we hooked it up to an acoustic modem that was about the size, shape and weight of a large brick. It had an amazing transfer rate of 300 baud. I had the opportunity to boot the computer, “through the switches”, used punched paper tape, magnetic tape in a variety of formats, and does anyone remember 12″x12″ magnetic cards?
I am much more fascinated with the technologic progress during my lifetime, than I am with being able to “one-up” anyone else. I remember that as a boy I would sit in front of the radio to watch The Lone Ranger, now HDTV plasma screens as large as a living room wall threaten to put the Bijou out of business.

It hasn’t been more than a year since I discarded my very first acoustic coupler… Of course it hasn’t been USED in over 20 years…
Steve K, very happy with cable broadband
