I’m in the Wausau area this weekend. My son is in the Destination Imagination tournament in Stevens Point on Saturday and we’re staying over Saturday night (in Mosinee) to geocache in the area. My original plan was to try tackling Three Bad Ribs – I suspect the snow on the ski trails will keep me from getting the final, but I could at least start it.

Does anyone have any suggestions for other good “need to walk” caches if I decide to not be as brutal on the kids and spouse?

We hope to introduce three families to geocaching on Saturday (today, I guess) as we kill time waiting for the results of the tournament. It seems like there are some nice caches in Stevens Point to serve as introductions to the sport.

Thanks for any suggestions for our Sunday adventures.

A little over a year ago we camped in the Wausau area with some friends who were newbies. We spent all day that Saturday caching in the Wausau/Stevens Point (even took a jaunt to the Point Brewery) area. Looking back at our finds, this is what I suggest:

GCB093 — The Forgotten War — neat virtual
GCFDB7 — Iverson Park Wet Foot 1 and 2 — this is the nice long walk in a nice park on mostly trails near a river
GC96CD — Hobo Cache — This was a really nice walk on trails that had historical signs throughout that really taught some great history (found this one after the May 04 geo-campout)

We also found Whiting Park and Echo Dells Cache. Both were fairly traditional, but in nice areas and great if you just want a nice walk.

Since we haven’t been there in a while, not sure of the current maintenance, but people still are finding them recently.

      Have fun!

I would also like to suggest the multi “Lone Pine” and the “Rough and Ready” in the 9-mile recreation area. We just did them and can say that the trails are much easier than the ones on Three Bad Ribs. This is pretty close to the Rib Mtn State Park too.

We also did Big Bull Falls which is on a great hiking/biking trail.
