Website Outage, 8/24/2006

For those of you who tried to access the WGA site today and couldn’t get to it, sorry for the inconvenience. The WGA web server was down from about 7am to 9pm.

What happened? An early morning storm took out power to the “data center” where the server is housed. Because of the length of the outage, the battery backup failed and the server shut down. When power was restored around noon, the server tried to restart but hung on boot up. Alan (CacheCows) power cycled it tonight and it booted normally and everything is now running fine.

The server is slated to be moved to a better equipped data center in September so hopefully it won’t be taken offline by any more acts of God.

Thanks to Alan and Jeremy for their hard work. This is a volunteer task, yet they take this just as seriously as if it was a major work outage. Sometimes my IT don’t move this fast! 😕

Thanks for all the hard work… we do appreciate it. We were so busy caching yesterday we did not get to check into here til we got settled into the motel and hooked up to the net.. so we did not know it was down. If we were home we probably been doing the 5 minute echo too.
