Before I go and buy some ammo cans for a couple hides I am planning, I want to make sure they will work for what I need. Are they steel? And has anyone welded things to them, and if so was the steel fairly good thickness so it doesn’t blow thru to easy? Thanks in advance 😈

They are fairly sturdy steel…but you wouldn’t want to stay in any one spot too long…I guess it depends on what method you use to do the welding…I so should have paid more attention when my dad was showing me how to weld….

They are made of a heavy sheet metal. They also have a pretty good coating of paint on them to add to the challenge. Personally, I am welding challenged on anything thinner than .125 with my stick welder.

I’ll go buy a couple at the local surplus store, the paint is no problem, angle grinder will clean that all up. Thanks for the info, i just wanted to make sure they were not aluminum or something that i am not able to weld.

I’m thinking that they are about 18 gage maybe 20.

Someone with more knowledge can correct me if I’m wrong, but BEFORE you think of welding or putting a grinder to the box, MAKE SURE they are VERY clean!! Keep in mind that these were AMMO boxes, meaning that small traces of gunpowder residue might still be contained within the box, and the last thing you want to do is to apply heat or a spark to any leftover powder residue which might be present!!

be carful about welding on the top it will melt the seal

yep, you are right, they are steel. Just take a flap wheel on you angle grinder, and it will take the paint right off….

Yes, as was stated, you want to clean it good.

Common mistake though is thinking that Gunpowder is an explosive..

I reload a ton of ammo for my other hobby, NRA Highpower Rifle. And NRA Bullseye Pistol. Modern Smokeless Powder is NOT and explosive. It is a Accelerant Propellant. it takes the Primer, which is explosive to ingite it. I It will burn, but it will not explode. Now Blackpowder is another story. This will explode if sparked, or even put under pressure.

as long as you clean the can out good, you will not have a problem. Simple Soap and Water will do this wonderful, or some Hoppe’s Number 9 Gun Cleaning solution..

As far as welding, Keep your current down, and watch your wire speed if you are using a wire feed, and you will not have a problem.

let us know how it turns out!

“I wonder if you know that the harp here is the grandfather of the modern day guitar. Yeah, it seems that early Minstrels were much larger people.

(Harpist: “Never mind, I’ll lug it myself.”)

Yeah, they had hands the size of small dogs.”
