for those who live in the west bend area what do you think of all these park n grabs that popped up lately? there has been no thought in the cache container or the cache placement and alot of them are in very dangerous spots. there must be a couple hundred that have been place by one person and after about a month the container is falling apart or either missing. some png are ok but most are put out so that this person can have the highest hide number and thats all. i have 3 caches out yes 2 are png but 1 of them is a special container thats hard to find. the other is somewhere that is very special to my wife and me. just my opinion and was wondering what others thought.

There are 20,000 caches hidden in Wisconsin. If you don’t like these PnGs try some of the other ones.

Nothing wrong with png hides… as long as they are well maintained by the CO. Through experience I’ve found that some are not maintained whether they are a png or a micro or a regular hide… but most COs do check on cache if notified.

even when they are just duct tape on a small zip lock bag tosed next to a fire hydrant? this is what it says on most of the PnGs around west bend. “Replace the log as needed or container if the cache container is broken or missing.
Before you replace a missing container, you must spend a reasonable amount of time searching – at least 5 minutes per difficulty rating – also make sure to read the full cache description for any special notes. The cache owner accepts that there is a chance that multiple containers could be at the site. Please remove duplicate containers if you find multiple caches at the site. Broken containers and full logs may be disposed of at will”.
yes we will and do do this when needed but to me its like saying im not going to maintain this. im not triing to start drama or mean this in a bad way at all so please dont take it the wrong way greenthumb.

Btw im not talking about series ones. im talking about the ones that are like they are just tosed next to a hydrant or light pole as they drove by.

I agree with you about the PnG’s in the West Bend area. The same cachers that are putting them down also have some good quality caches in place. Most of the PnG’s we just drive on by. IMHO if you have no intention of maintaining your caches, you should not be placing any more out. I think that they are just putting them out for the numbers. I am guilty of replacing one or two of their caches, but don’t plan on replacing any more. One thing you’ll never see Maw and Paw Kettle do is place a throw down cache in a guardrail. We spend a lot of time planning, placing and maintaining our caches.

It’s true that nobody is required to search for the caches in question. However, they do take up space, perhaps preventing others from placing caches of higher quality. Also, the “GCRM” part of it sets a terrible example for newer cachers.

IMHO, the local West Bend cachers may be concerned that they may not get “repeat customers” for the Ca$h Bash if there aren’t new caches each year, OTHER THAN the 50+ put out by the Bash Hiding Committee. It is a valid concern if cachers are spending 3 days in your community.
However, if all they find each year OTHER THAN the 50+ WBCB hides are a bunch of P/G caches, they could tire of those, as well.

I do agree that COs should maintain there own caches, and not assume that others will tend to the caches needs. I believe cache maintenance is expected in the “Guidelines for Hiding a Geocache” section on GC, is it not?
I carry some “spare parts” in the spirit of the hunt, and am glad to help maintain caches other than my own.

But don’t assume I will fix your P/G cache. It’s kinda like holding the remote, and asking you to get up and change the channel for me!

plus a cache placed next to or across train tracks is safer then some of the PnGs here in west bend. mainly the guard rails that are on curves or at the bottom of a hill. also the road side PnGs that the only way to park is with your car half on the road and those are on busey main county roads. there are alot of those in west bend.

What do hope to get out of these posts? I’ve done some but why bother? Would you rather they be all puzzles?

You really need to get out of West Bend and see what is out there. PnGs and power trails of PnGs are the rage right now and it probably won’t stop. As long as cachers keep finding them hiders will keep hiding them. Some are good and some are bad. The amount of PnGs in West Bend is not that different from many other areas. Not defending them or criticizing them. Just something that you have to put up with if you want to keep cachin’.

Well, for those of us who can’t do a lot of hiking or biking, or climbing or jumping or any other strenous aactivity (at least without being seriously laid up the next several days), P&Gs are a god-send. At least they get us out of the house for awhile instead of sitting in front of the TV.

Heck at least with some of those P&Gs in West Bend, I doubt there will be a lot of ticks to contend with either. 🙂
