Can’t add more than what has been said, but there have been a few more caches added to the trail going to West Salem. I actually like the fact that the trails here haven’t turned into power trails.
Food, Trempealu Hotel is great for food and easy to get to once off the trail.
The caches up here have a unique style for the most part, but a few gems stand out as pointed out. Watch out for that one cache in West Salem, yes those folks can be pretty testy with cachers.07/08/2010 at 2:59 am #1932815About that West Salem cache… We heard it was so bad that we didn’t even try it. That was our only time caching in LaCrosse County, and we haven’t been back since. Enough said. 😉
07/08/2010 at 3:36 am #1932816Yeah, you really should change that one to a “found,” you know. I mean…..it can’t be any worse than some nano on a park bench, can it? 🙄
07/08/2010 at 6:29 am #1932817That depends on where the bench is…
07/08/2010 at 12:25 pm #1932818I dunno.. I think I’ve seen some LPC’s that are better than that one in West Salem. 😛 The only good thing about that one is it isn’t one just randomly placed in a garbage dump.
Back to the bike trail and caches in this area, I’d suggest any Raslas or TheBalk’s caches along with of course T/B’s as quality caches, I’d really recommend Raslas’s No Kit Needed Cache as a good one of theirs and TheBalk’s have a couple near Sparta/Cashton that are all good also.
07/08/2010 at 1:30 pm #1932819If you want to bike, take a ride to Winona MN (not too much further away – 30 – 45 minutes). They have a very nice trail around Long Lake and is all park with nice views, memorials, visitor center, playgrounds, decks, and such. We parked at various locations and walked a lot of it. Caches are nicely done. Some in high muggle area, but still easy to grab.
07/09/2010 at 2:25 am #1932820I have started doing the La Crosse area and would recommend the Hixton Forrest caches as well. I have been heading up about an hour or so before dark to catch the sunsets, it is truely amazing. Also, you do really need to stay away from that really crappy cache in West Salem. I got approached by someone who kept demanding quarters, said he lived there but I didn’t believe him.
07/09/2010 at 2:27 am #1932821And I would echo the Winona trip except that most of the roadside caches along the way are missing but the bike ride around the lake is really nice and scenic.
07/09/2010 at 2:58 am #1932822I would also recommend the Hixon forest trail caches. If you do make a stop at Pettibone, check out one of my hides located near to the Pettibone Gazebo: GC1JG8H.
If you want to do some dash-and-caching, you may want to look into the “Three Rivers Trail”.
07/09/2010 at 12:52 pm #1932823We passed through the area last summer and were able to do about a dozen caches. The view from the bluffs is spectacular. We recommend the bluff caches and the earthcaches there.
Our favorite cache in the area was Stairway to Pettibone (GC1C7HV). It’s not the most scenic area, but the concept makes it worth it.
We also did about half of the Goose Island series. The containers are fun. It’s definitely a family friendly series. But, take a DEET shower before starting. The skeeters are merciless.
07/11/2010 at 11:53 pm #1932824Well, caching in La Crosse pretty much sucked. I think we got 5? Poison ivy and mosquitos were bad (which could be anywhere this time of year), but the bike trails did not have much and the ones we went to look for were mostly missing. Oh well, at least the boat ride on the Mississippi was worth the trip there. Thanks for all the tips anyways folks! 😕
07/12/2010 at 12:25 am #1932825I was out caching with the Weasel from Iowa in the area yesterday and we came upon a couple logs signed by you folks. Also picked up the pathtag you placed in a cache at which point the Weasel was like a little kid, seems he has a collection and it was the first I’ve ever seen in a cache. Just want to say thanks for sharing with us!
07/12/2010 at 2:20 am #1932826😯 Cool! I can’t remember which one I left it in. I saw you had picked it up, but I think some may have literally been falling out of my pockets during the day – doh! Glad you enjoyed i 😆
