In all seriousness….I’d challenge anyone seeing this to go to their facebook caching pages, tell their friends there to visit here and throw some new topics out there. Refer to the post by sandlanders for ideas. 😉 I think many of the folks who used to play here would come back if anything interesting were happening.
02/18/2015 at 2:11 pm #2035831Did you see my page Team Northwoods Geocaching? See the comment I placed under my plans for the LCG Event. That one post reached 101 people since I posted it 17 hours ago. My posts this week alone reached 1,488.

02/18/2015 at 2:26 pm #2035833Nice, TN. It would also help if anyone who is part of any Facebook group(s) could refer any appropriate questions to the WGA forums. For instance, if someone in a group you are in asks something about what the best GPS receiver to get might be, sure, share in that group, but also suggest… “Hey, you could reach a lot more people if you would also ask that same question in the WGA forums. They have topics for General, for Help, for Technology, and whole bunch of others there. Give it a try!”
There are many good reasons for local groups, and many topics in those might be of more interest to the locals than to the general Wisconsin caching population, but it doesn’t hurt to let the locals, especially the newbies, know that there is one big umbrella organization for the state, and the main website isn’t on Facebook.
BTW, I like the social shout-outs and other official information put out on the official WGA FB site. It’s also the go-to place when the site is down (which hasn’t been very often lately, thanks to The Cat and The Squirrel). However, I’m not sure if all the people who view the “other” WGA site on FB know that that one isn’t officially put out, maintained, or always viewed by the WGA, although a WGA member is in charge of that site.
02/18/2015 at 2:29 pm #2035834I agree with you but it will take some time and the forums have some disadvantages you will have to make up for with content and reach that smaller groups might not get. It will take some thinking over.
Here are some excerpts from my response in the Candidates Corner.
If there is a topic in the forum that you want more input on. Post the link on every group page.

02/18/2015 at 2:33 pm #2035835I have my ideas on what should happen with the rogue WGA FB group (not a Page). Unfortunately, the name cannot be changed so there are few options for it.
Everything should point back here to the website. WGA FB page, etc should all entice people to check this out. While we had a rough month or two, we are steadily gaining members back and look at all the new posts but newbies or those grizzled ol’ veterans returning to the forums.

02/18/2015 at 3:01 pm #2035837I’m one of the last people in the world not on FB so I appreciate this site as my connection to caching and other cachers. Thanks to all who make the effort to post in multiple places!
02/18/2015 at 3:06 pm #2035838Who are you calling grizzled ol’ veteran?
02/18/2015 at 4:02 pm #2035850Not you sir, you are always here. A fixture on this great slice o’ the web.
I was referring more to the likes of the Head of Cheese and that Fella that Needs to Run and other former fixtures of the Forums that have returned to the site.
BTW, you are too young to be a grizzled veteran.

02/19/2015 at 11:29 am #2035905Is there a listing somewhere of the different Wisconsin Geocaching groups that are on facebook?

02/19/2015 at 11:46 am #2035906Not that I know of. The groups are of all kinds, some open, some closed, some secret. They are usually formed by area, but sometimes there is more than one. Some people host more than one, too. Some areas have no groups. It’s nothing formal; they just all sprung up over time.
I get my Wisconsin caching fix from this WGA website and the forums here. The posts are organized into topics, and the chat can go on in the off-topic. It’s so hard for me to keep track of what is going on in the Facebook groups. Being from central Wisconsin, I guess I’m partial to all parts of the state and also to none of them. And there is no central Wisconsin FB group.
I believe you are from the Milwaukee area, Cinnamongirl, so maybe someone from a FB group in that area can give you more details and an invite or whatever they do. (Just keep coming back here, though. It’s the best place. 😀 )
02/19/2015 at 11:57 am #2035908The only Geocaching FB group I follow is Team Northwoods as they are in my area. I think FB has destroyed many internet communities. I would rather come to one place to get my information.

Couldn’t pick a better place than HERE!!!
02/19/2015 at 12:52 pm #2035913I never really left, just activated super-lurker mode as I’m so busy now with everything that I don’t post in TS anymore and have essentially been ignoring FB all together even though I’m logged in so it looks like I’m on.
02/19/2015 at 12:55 pm #2035915I only am in a group for far north caching, since that’s Trekkin’s home territory. I like having one place to visit..here. I actually pulled myself off Facebook for a longish time. I made so much better use of my time while I was away. I went back when I realized how much birding stuff I was missing. Birding groups have gone through similar changes. I think there is a place for both, and do think the way the WGA page is used to connect the two formats has been helpful. When I grudgingly reactivated Facebook, I promised myself I wouldn’t get wrapped up in all the side sites, and that’s helped with avoiding the time suck issue.
