Wonder what a person would pay for a 2005 or a 2010 coin especially when there are just a few uncirculated ones left?

I stopped bidding for a 2005 on E-Bay recently at $22.00. looked like two other were ready to keep battling 50 cents at a time until it closed.

We have (2) 2011’s. one is unactivated. Is it worth enough to fund my retirement?

Some things are worth more than money…

If the WGA is looking to divest itself of these coins and no longer wants to keep them for something special, perhaps one of each can be offered at the next silent auction at a WGA event (and then subsequent ones) for attendees to bid on. If people want to sell their own coins on eBay, that’s their business, but I would like to see the WGA offer the coins in their possession to members of the organization in some way so that the coins (at least initially) go to Wisconsin folks, not someone who want them just to make a turnaround profit on eBay.

This is where I was leading the conversation. Not an online auction but offered to our members.  🙂

I purchased a 2005 coin last year at the auction. Considering the options of selling them outright at WGA events versus a Silent Auction. I think I paid $25, possibly $30 at the picnic.

Mr GT, the 2011 may be worth a little gas money but don’t try to move the 2012’s.  😐

I read something about the 2005 coins a while back but can’t find the message thread.  If I recall correctly, after the minting of the 2005 gold-colored geocoins, there was an error on Groundspeak’s part and an extra 75 tracking codes were given to the WGA.  With those extra “free” codes the WGA minted 75 special edition 2005 coins that were silver on one (or both?) sides.  That special coin was not intended to ever be sold, but was to be used only as a special service reward coin for service above and beyond the norm (reviewers, special achievements on behalf of the WGA, etc.).  Only a few were given out each year, with (I think) maybe a dozen or so awarded within the first 4 or 5 years.  Are those the 2005 coins that are in inventory?  If so, we may not want to sell those but dole them out very sparingly in the years to come.

Inventory is NOT the special coins just the regular gold 2005.

The limited edition coins are saved for special recognition of those that volunteer their time and efforts over prolonged periods of time. They go to those that have gone above and beyond what is required. I believe our last recipient was Stephanie England in 2015 for all the time she has donated to the WGA by working the merchandise booth.

The awarding of these coins comes from the determination of the BOD.

We would never, ever, ever (unless we were insolvent and nearing disbanding) sell these special coins for monetary gain. These are the Holy Grail items of the WGA’s inventory.

As a side note, we have in our possession an example of all coins and pathtags through our history as keepsakes/mementos. They also will not be sold off as we wish to keep a piece of our history to help tell the tail.

Maybe sometime we can get a photograph of all to lay out what we have created over the years.

I like the idea of giving them away on special occasions like say when someone retires.

Just make sure to let the folks on the BOD know when you retire from geocaching, Mister GT, and maybe they’ll consider it… 😈
