I was recently introduced to geocoins. I have several from Canada and saw some online from Texas and California. The canadian ones are trackable, similar to travelbugs. They are very cool! What about the WGA creating some and having them minted? I have no idea of cost or how to go about doing this, but if anyone does, I would be happy to help. Perhaps they could be sold in the WGA store to defray the cost.

For those wanting more information about the Canada geocoins, check out this link. It looks like the Canada and Texas geocoins are being sold by the same people… and they maintain their own tracking system for the coins separate from geocaching.com. Generic numbered geocoins are also available from geocachetreasure.com. Check out this Groundspeak topic for the initial discussion of geocoins.

Getting our own geocoins made would require quite a bit of money up front ($1000+… more than the WGA has right now). But the coins could be sold for more than it cost to make them, thus generating money for the WGA. How about Wisconsin Geocaching wooden nickels instead?

    A sidenote:

The version of geocoins that are trackable like TB’s were created by Moun10bike. His are trackable due to a special arrangement he has with Jeremy. Moun10bike has donated considerable time and physical material to the geocaching.com website, and Jeremy thanked him by adding his geocoins into the TB database.

F.Y.I., the Canadian geocoins are trackable on their web site (http://www.geocoins.ca/) as jvechinski stated, not on geocaching.com. Still, they are very cool, as are Moun10bike’s. I have read all of the forums (that I could find) on geocoins and I still think they are very distinctive and very cool. Perhaps the WGA could spark some interest in them in this area if they had their own. I have purchased some Canadian geocoins and some from geotreasures.com. I will be leaving them in caches around the state. Be on the lookout for these great cache items.

Again, if anyone would like to pursue WGA geocoins, count me in. Where there is a will, there is a way! Besides, being in teaching, you get used to spending a good deal of your own money for things that make you passionate, like teaching and geocaching.

I think it sounds like a good idea. I also think Jeremy’s idea of a wooden coin sounds good too — and way less expensive. We could make them ourselves with wooden disks and a special WGA stamp that we could order.

I think something “special” to promote WGA would be a great thing. Whatever is affordable is best. Greater things can come later! How do we go about this?

A little late on this discussion, but I found this link to a wooden nickel site that I was investigating for pricing and quantities. The prices are pretty reasonable.

Even later in this discussion . . .
Another option is a WGA-labelled CD. CD-R disks are VERY inexpensive, watch for sales at local computer stores. A stack of 100 can be had for $20 or so. A pack of 50 paper CD envelopes can be had for less than $10, if I remember correctly. Labels can be printed with the logo and stuck on each one. And what would be on the CD? That’s up to WGA. A link to the web site of course, and to geocaching.com. Maybe some photos of favorites places, past gatherings, etc., the WGA theme song (make one up!). Once a ‘master’ disk has been created, it can be distributed and freely copied among WGA members. CD Writers are becoming more prevalent all the time. My $.02 worth.

The Longitude and Latitude song would really need to be considered for this application…

Another suggestion would be that the coins be made of plastic (recycled of course). I know that there are a few plastics manufacturers in the area, and I could see that quite of few of these could be done up at one time. Also, to cut back on the scrap, the coins could be square not round, making them stand out even more. At one time, my old high school taught plastic fabrication. That could be another avenue to check.

    Just tossing out ideas…
