I looked over the post and this discussion dates back to 2002. I would hate this to become a dead subject and in two years resurface again. If this project is to go forward WGA must face the fact it will cost a lot of money upfront regardless of a coin having a number, in color, being pressed or casted. Oppss getting off subject… Anyhow I’ am interested and willing to provide my time into the matter. While I don’t consider myself as an expert, I have a pretty good background doing such projects for several years in the Navy.

Sounds like we have volunteers. As I mentioned, it would be great to have someone step forward to spearhead this. I’ll help with the WGA board side of things, but it would be nice to have those of you who are asking for this to follow-up on the details, such as refining some designs, getting quotes, etc.

My 2 cents on the design above: looks good. Can we include a couple of icons that say geocaching and/or Wisconsin? For example (not all of these) trails, trees, lakes, rivers, hills, GPS satellites, cheese, cows.

I will try to work up another design or two at max over the next week. I don’t mind hitting up manufactures for quotes once we have a design we are set on. Makes it easier for them to give a accurate price once they see the work that needs to be completed.

I will also post a back design for the coins as well in the near future.

Wow, I think that’s one of the few designs I’ve seen that would actually work well with just metal. Take a look at pdxmarathonman’s coin. It would look good coming from the company he used, and perfect, but more expensive from the company that did the Alaska coin.

NurseDave that’s a great site to view a whole bunch of coins.

**** important question for who ever can answer ****

I looking at the back of the coins and was going to create something similar to the coin shown below. But here my dilemma.
The ground speak logo as I understand can be used. But on other coins I seen they all say “Used with permission from groundspeak.com”. I think this is odd since the use of logos are not commonly accompanied by such verbiage unless on a printed document.

So, my main question here is this verbiage required by groundspeak or can their logo be used and the copyright symbol be placed next to it.

I ask this because I think the verbiage is redundant since its a metal coin and regardless if the logo was used with or without permission its permanently made in the coin.

This is important to me since I feel this effects the look of the coin. If the verbiage “Used with permission from groundspeak.com” is required I rather leave their logo off.

    Please let me know……

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I’d have to fight about having cheese and/or cows on a coin representing WI Geocachers!!! While we do reside in this state, and on most occasions are very proud of where we live, Geocaching is not about our state heritage…it’s about the trees, the paths, the brooks, streams and lakes. It’s about the walk and those we walk with. It’s about finding a prize in the last place we look. It’s not about cows or cheese! If someone is caching in a field of cows, chances are they’ve crossed into private property and that’s not good. If there is cheese in an ammo box…well…we all know how gross that would be! So I vote we stick to the trees, rivers, lakes, etc!
(I mean, if we’re going for the whole “What our state is known for” thing, where’s the badger or the packer backer?…BLAH!)

PC: any chance you can work some kind of hidden item in a tree? So it can be seen, but not at first glance…

I agree with MB, the cheese thing is over done … which is the best way to have grilled cheese (a bit burned).

Me and the Mrs both grew up on dairy farms … we think cows and cheese are great … but have nothing to do with WI and Geocaching. Good call, MB! If anything include a burdock plant on the coin, I seem to run in those much more while geocaching, than dairy products.

If you wish to use the geocaching.com logo, you would have to include the URL beneath the logo (like on the usageocoins) but you are not required to use the logo if you so desire.

The only required text for trackable (on geocaching.com) coins would be: “Trackable on Geocaching.com”

That qoute is from the official reply from TPTB @ grounspeak posted above.

I don’t know if it’s the same if they are tracking the coin without their logo on it, but if you use the logo, you have to sign a contract with them either saying you aren’t going to make any money or what percentage you’re going to them. They also have to approve your design.

Just a comment on the coin that is currently being proposed on the other thread (it says not to post there). Looks really good, but the leaf on the back makes me think it’s Canadian. Of course, that’s just my comments (and it might not be worth all that much).

Good point — Wanted to do something that was state related but not already on another coin. The coat of arms has lots of detail — to much for color probably. The state bird would look like Ohio coin. Don’t even want to think about the state fish. 🙂

I also trying to stay away from the stereo typical Wisconsin image (cow / cheese). Unfortunately seems like this state is not really known for any awesome landmark natural or manmade, that I know of.

Anyhow that’s why getting people to post submission and post ideas might help.

    Thanks for the input.

one of the state animals is a whitetail deer, that may look good, maybe a bust of one instead of the whole body . the quarter had a desgin propesd with a whole body. what would be the chances of getting that artwork released? http://www.wdfi.org/newsroom/wi_quarter/otherProposed.htm

That’s exactly the same thought I had too.

    Here’s a list of the state’s symbols:

Who’s up for a pair of polka dancers on the back?

Coming up with a good original design is usually quite difficult. I’d like to say thanks for everyone’s input, and especially to those heading the project.

The front of the coin is the best suggestion I’ve seen for WI. I’m not sure about the star for the capitol, as it somewhat ruins the clean look the state previously had.

The oak leaf on the back is a good idea, although it does hint Canadian, and if the coins will be in color, it doesn’t add much. I suppose making the coins in color or not depends on the design used.

Maybe just use the shield from the coat of arms on the back side? Although I’m from Wisconsin, I didn’t remember the state motto is “Forward,” so at first that didn’t make much sense.

I’m not sure about the two stars, since WI is the 30th state in the Union.

The designs for both sides are better than I would have come up with, so please take this constructively.

    Thanks,
    Opossum

Sorry, been away a while. Lots of good ideas. I kind of like the explorers image from the quarter that didn’t make it. Kind of speaks to what we do too. My 2 cents worth.
