The Appleton area – ok, maybe just me – is canvassing to have the fall picnic held at High Cliff State Park.

Part of the pitch to the Board about having the picnic there is a commitment to round up local cachers, and have upwards of 20 new, PERMANENT caches placed in or around the park.

We definately would come if it were at High Cliff. We camped there last October and had bad weather and didn’t get to do much caching. We were planning on a return trip this Fall and would probably spend the weekend if it was there.

Well there is an Earthcache there…… 😛
…in fact that is where I found my very first Geocache…”Cliff Dweller.”
I love that park and would likely make it.

    Ummmm…where is High Cliff?

Northeast corner, if you will, of Lake Winnebago.

It may be a mute point if a picnic location is already in the works, but High Cliff kicked all our caches out a couple years back and while they have let a couple back in, I don’t think they’d let us put a bunch of perms in there.

    Thanks for the info Lostby7.

Work on the fall picnic will start after the campout. High Cliff is one great possibility, but there are other potential sites as well. I think we have enough on our plate right now related to planning the campout, so this poll may be about 2 weeks premature.

High Cliff is one of the few parks in the state that fits our needs for a campout. As you remember, it was a nice spot when we held the campout there a number of years ago.

I’d rather see us revisit the park for a campout, and not a picnic.

I think placing permanent caches for a WGA event is a bad idea. We’ve always promised the parks that ALL our caches would be removed at the end of an event. This has gone a long way in promoting good relationships with the parks we visit.

I think that hiding permanent caches for events will have a negative long lasting effect on our ability to get permission for events.

I would like a High Cliff event! I have lived in Oshkosh for 7 years almost now, and all everyone always tells me about is High Cliff this and High Cliff that….

I figure it can’t be THAT high being as how I am from Colorado and all….and don’t get me started on the ski slope on rib “mountain”…. 🙄

High Cliff has some great areas. I was just there 2 weekends ago. All I kept thinking to myself was. GOOD PLACE FOR A CACHE. there were only 3 in the park. I walked the 5 miles with 5 scouts to get them, but there is pleanty of open space (if alowed by the park) and great trails.

I would return there for a daytrip.

    Feakin’ Appleton would be awesome.

I haven’t been there in almost 10 years, and have been waiting for a reason to go back.

I hope it’s just like it used to be, and not changed so much like K-town has in that time.

last time I was there, people went out of their way to say hello to you on the streets. Everyone was friendly, even while in traffic. It was amazing and I hope it still is.

So, yes, High Cliff would be a great place to hold the picnic.

    What can I bring??? 😀

I agree that the place is better suited for a Campout than a picnic and would vote for the campout of 09 be held there.

As far a PERMs go, I am of the opinion that if the Park kicked the caches out several years ago, then we should not attempt to place any new ones, or if we do, just a select few. This is why I think it would be better to host a Campout there as visitors could come into town and cache their butts off for 2 days and still have more caches to find. There are enough caches in the town proper that I just don’t think it’ss necessary to go placing a bunch in the park itself.

I don’t think the 2 Traditionals placed in the Park were placed with permission, though I could be wrong and am open to correction. The Earthcache is a non-issue.

    1. I think the approval of an Earthcache is far easier as there is no permanent “thing” in the park for them to get sore about.

    2. I intend on finalizing an Earthcache there not far from the Kilns

    3. I also intend on using a few of the spots in the park as Reference Points for a cache about the Winnebago Wars. This one would also likely not have a cache in the park proper, but take you to various places for clues.

    4. I think there’s another great opportunity for a 3rd Earthcache that I just haven’t had time to work on, but if anyone want to know what I’m thinking they call IM me.

So, I vote for not having the picnic there and instead reserving that fantastic place for the Campout next year.

I agree that High Cliff would be better suited for a camp out. As far as a picnic location, I would suggest the Brown County Reforestation Camp/NEW Zoo. Lots of space for some temp caches and a great zoo would double as entertainment for non caching family members as well.

The Brown County board voted not to charge for cache placement last year and I think that if we decided to host a statewide event there to show our support for their decision, it would go a long way to ensure the topic never comes back up again.

I would even be willing to help out wherever possible.
