Well, what do you think? I have been a podcast listener for a number of years, with a range of topics that would spin your head. Recently I have been looking into the “mechanics” behind the scenes, and am wondering what sort of interest there might be in this sort of thing?
There are some nice podcast about geocaching out there (podcacher and geocachng podcast are the best I think), and a couple of neat ones that are locally specific, (there is one for Twin Cities, and SLAGA does a nice one) Do we have enough material to do one for this area?? I think so!
EDIT: There was supposed to be an option for “NEVER! How DARE you suggest such an abomination” but it got cut off.
04/29/2008 at 5:54 pm #1888484I have no idea how to listen to a podcast…..I guess I’m a noob.
04/29/2008 at 8:40 pm #1888485I would definitely be in favor of a podcast. The only question I would have would be the amount of unique material available. It would be nice to have one specific to Geocaching in Wisconsin.
Maybe a forum thread about topics could help to get the ball rolling. It wouldn’t have to be as long some of the other podcasts that are available. Just a place for local cachers to give input and such…
Great Idea! 😀
04/29/2008 at 9:07 pm #1888486You hit the nail right on the head. We don’t need to cover GPS reviews or field equipment so much, those are covered. I was thinking maybe even a monthly or bi-weekly type of thing just about Wisconsin specific stuff, like events and what not. I’m not looking to have another hour long show (though that WOULD be cool if we had the content) spouting the exact same news and notes all over again.
Maybe a cache of the month section where people can call in to a voice mail line and explain why they think cache XYZ is a great cache! Or phone in milestones or FTF hunts (I know that is a rip off of those “other”shows, but if I set up a voice mail, darn it I’m going to use it!)
Have some interviews at the big events, maybe a “funny Wisconsin caching” story section….(It could be titled “Why I had to buy new pants at three am 275 miles from home!” or “Honestly Honey, you should see how much mud I DID get cleaned off before I came in the house” or “Honest officer, it is a game using a GPS, I’m not making a ‘drug drop'”)
Just some ideas….
04/29/2008 at 9:44 pm #1888487I brought up this idea at the end of the last WGA board meeting. I enjoy listening to other geocaching podcasts and would love to have a Wisconsin based one. Ideas I think would work:
1. WGA events – interviewing people, plus recording any official meetings.
2. COTM / COTY coverage.
3. Geocaching with Wisconsin geocachers from around the state – where somebody would interview them during an actual geocache hunt.
4. Coverage of anything else going on in the WGA – things like design contests, geocoins going on sale, hot topics from the forums, etc.
I haven’t moved forward on this because I know absolutley nothing about the logistics of putting together a podcast. I know lots of people do a podcast just with some equipment from their computer, but we would need to be mobile.
04/29/2008 at 10:03 pm #1888488Yes. that is a dilemma that will need to be figured out, but with some of the new softwares I have been searhcing around, and some of the “skype” style of things, you could do a show over a phone with minimal quality issues. All the “on-site” and “cache-alongs” could easily be done over a phone call, or even with a small Digital recorder that can be had very cheaply.
it could ALSO be done using “field reporters” to get a nice spread around the state for the interviews and “cache-along”
BTW, the idea of going along with someone on a cache hunt while you interview them is a SOLID idea!! I’ve already coined the phrase “cache-along”
04/30/2008 at 11:53 pm #1888489we vote yes,
we were interviewed by cache-a-maniacs podcast for episode 69, it was fun
we also listen to podcacher. we download episodes and listen to them in the car while geocaching
05/01/2008 at 12:17 am #1888490I listened to that interview! That was just about when I came up with the idea.
05/01/2008 at 12:22 am #1888491Ummmmm……. How do you listen to a podcast? I have no idea.

05/01/2008 at 3:41 pm #1888493Podcasts are MP3 files that can either be listened to on the computer or on an MP3 player like iPod. But instead of music, it’s talk! It’s like listening to a radio show about geocaching.
Of course there are podcasts out there about every conceivable topic. And anybody who has the right equipment and software can make them.
