What do you take along?

Hi gang,

Since I’m new to this, I had another “first” this morning. My wife was at work, our daughter slept over at a friend’s house, I had dropped my son at karate and the dog and I had nothing else to do but hunt cache. (Right? I mean, there’s no way I could have cut the grass in that hour anyway!)

So, knowing that I’d have about an hour I went online to look for something close to karate. Well, well, well, Mr. Thorsen comes through with: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=e7aaccb5-c6c9-45a7-a8ff-9d988be1adee (in the Xs). By the way Jeff, nice little cache. I bet I’ve taken my kids to that park a hundred times, played with the Xs and never noticed those little numbers. Too funny what our brains don’t see when we’re not looking.

Anyway, I did NOT log this cache as complete yet because when I found what I’m sure is the ziplock with the final cache, it was, well, “slimy”. And, silly me, I don’t have a thing along to clean it or my hands except for the dog. And, I’m not sure the dog would appreciate being used as a rag. So, I left it tucked safe and secure in its hiding place until I can go back more prepared.

So, now I know that I need to get one of those little plastic travel containers of wipes and add it to my waist pack, and not leave the waist pack at home. By the way, guess where the bug spray was…that’s right, in the waist pack at home 😉

So, here’s your chance Expert Cachers… help me learn from your experience. What do YOU take along “just in case”?

There are two schools of thought here.
1. You can’t take too much.
2. Your taking too much.

Personally, I am ambivalent. Pack every thing you can think of and then leave the pack in the car. Carry only the GPS and a compass with you on the trail. Sometimes I carry my flashlight or cell phone, just to have something to lose on the trail.
Opinions vary on this subject. Here is what is known as a Markwell:

Trudy & Beast,

Thanks for the Markwell. I had looked through “all” help threads here at wi-geocaching.com but neglected to poke around at the big site. Sometimes it seems like there’s too much there…

Lots of good ideas in that thread!
