Four years ago today we got our GPS receiver, and we found our first geocache (GC6C11). We were so psyched to see that this little piece of plastic and electronics could get us to a particular spot in the woods where we were told that we would find a plastic box hiding. Jumped up and down with excitement. This game still excites us, and as always, it’s the “Got it!” moment.
There was a recent post about enjoying being taken to places the cacher(s) never knew about before caching. What keeps you excited about geocaching, especially if you’ve been at it for a while?
10/18/2011 at 2:04 am #1953997It’s the places we go, it’s the people we meet, it’s the thrill of the hunt, it’s the satisfaction of solving an interesting puzzle, it’s learning something new, it’s the creativity of the hides.
While not every cache has that thrill, the ones that have something that shines make up for alot.
of course, that is my opinion. Your mileage may vary.

10/18/2011 at 2:09 am #1953998For me it’s the hunt and the scenery.
I like being able to find something that so many people walk by and never notice. I love to be taken to beautiful places that I never would have found on my own. I also love that it gives me great stories to tell. I should also mention that I enjoy the time with my kids, walking, throwing rocks, stopping for ice cream and playing at the play areas.10/18/2011 at 2:45 am #1953999For me it’s seeing all the different varieties of film canisters and all the different places on a guard rail they can be hidden. 😆 Just kidding. I love going to different places that I have never been and never would have gone to otherwise.
All opinions, comments, and useless drivel I post are mine alone and do not reflect the opinions of the WGA BOD.

I literally have thousands of more reasons, but I don’t think you would want me to share them all. IF southeast WI cachers were wondering, we were on ‘Caching with Condella’ three times.
10/18/2011 at 2:50 am #1954001Quality time with the little hippies and the time I get to spend with all the friends I’ve made through caching.
10/18/2011 at 2:54 am #1954002Kid caching photos… Love ’em!
And I love the fact that so many folks make this a family activity.10/18/2011 at 10:19 am #1954003I agree with every reason so far and there’s probably about a dozen reasons I love caching that I haven’t discovered yet.
Following the signals from space.
10/18/2011 at 1:24 pm #1954004For me, it is the sense of adventure and exploration, combined with the social aspect of the shared experiences. I suppose this is why I don’t like power trails, LPCs, etc. I want adventure, not boring stops for numbers.

I enjoy seeing places I have never been or even those I see a lot. I like the social aspect of caching, as well as the peaceful solitude of caching alone. I like the creative containers and caches that teach something or highlight a noteworthy place. And yes, I do like the power trails and guard rails too. The only caches I don’t like are ones I don’t find. 😳 👿 For me the thrill is Aha! There it is!
10/19/2011 at 12:09 am #1954006Caching is one thing my sweetie and I can enjoy together. Otherwise our many interests are pretty diverse. We like all the new places, finding awesome hides, meeting new friends, caching with kids, etc that have already been mentioned. I like building creative caches and finding places to put them where they’ll last and not get wrecked. We don’t particularly like getting or leaving crappy logs, there is always a story to tell and it only takes a minute.
We keep track of our counts, but are not number driven. We usually do around 100 finds per year, although we have had a couple of more intensive spurts – usually leading up to a milestone while on vacation someplace far away.
All in all, this has been a great hobby that we hope to enjoy for years to come!

10/19/2011 at 1:11 am #1954007There are two things for me. The first is the opportunity to visit places that I wouldn’t have probably gone otherwise. I’ve gone many places solo, have taken my kids many times, and have also gone on a couple of group outings. I’ve been amazed at the jewels of places that are literally in my own back yard and never knew it.
The second is the creativity of cache placers. Being a puzzle junkie, there seems to be a nearly endless supply of puzzle caches that are great mental challenges. There is also the creativity of the placer in the container, camo, placement, etc.

Also being able to loose myself out in the country or a forest.10/19/2011 at 12:51 pm #1954009Years ago I used to get the blues a lot. Not full-blown depression, just a little down. It finally dawned on me how happy I feel outside, especially in the woods. Making this a priority has made me a much happier and content person, which also means that the whole family is happier. You know, “if mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy”. Caching gives me an extra excuse to be outside and has brought me to many places I never knew existed, especially since I didn’t grow up around here. Whether I’m caching with my family or by myself, I think for me it is just being outside and enjoying the fresh air, trees, rocks, water, etc. There are other things about caching that I enjoy but that’s my favorite.
