I’m hoping to get some birthday money, and am considering blowing it on a GPSr (I use my sons etrex yellow). What do you have, and why do you like or dislike it?

Basically, I’m looking for better accuracy, more waypoint storage, and maps. Other features I don’t know much about so you’ll have to fill me in Oh yeah- if anyone’s selling, I’m interested

Edited to make it etrex, not garmin.

Since you are familiar with the general Garmin layout, I would highly recommend upgrading to a Garmin Etrex Legend. I just came from Gander Mountain, where they have a sale on the Legend with the Topo Map CD for $199. Thats about $100 off normal.

The Legend will store up to 1000 waypoints and upload of detailed maps from your PC. Memory is large enough to contain about 3/4 of Wisconsin in very high detail. There are other units with more memory and color screens, but dollar for dollar, the Legend is dang hard to beat.

Also, if you are an E-bayer, there are some good deals to be had there sometimes. Just remember, any unit that you buy will require an additional $100+ for mapping software if it wasn’t included.

As a side note, does anyone know if the topo software has the same road detail as MetroGuide or Roads & Recreation?

I’ve got a 60cs…..i love it. Its the first gpsr i’ve had, so I don’t have much to compare it too personally. It has loads of memory, the screen is really good, durable as all get out (so far). It better be good for what it costs though lol.

our geocache family friends have a Garmin legend and they seem to love it. I got a copy of the Garmin Metroguide Version 5.0. This mapping program is not the newest version, and there isnt alot of changes. Here is a link to the newest version. http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/MetroGuideNT.jsp

Now This unit is compatible, but the only downfall is it only shows the detail maps, but doesnt autoroute, which gives you detail directions from point to point.

Right now I just crossed over the family line and got a new Magellan Explorist 600. This unit has all the bells and wistles you can want for geocaching. It has the 3 axil electronic compass so it still points to the cache even standing still! Also another is option for SD Card memory for alot of mapping and info storage. Im still learning this new unit.

We have a Garmin 60C and LOVE IT. We have owned a GPS 12 and GPSMAP 76S and the 60C is by far a superior GPS. We have also used a few of the etrex models and found them to be OK. The 60C has so many practical features on it that it’s the only GPS I recommend to anyone.

I have had a Garmin GPS II, III, V, and 12. The 12 was very good for me in the field, the II was destroyed by leaving mounted on the dash of my truck for a year (LCDS were toast). I currently use my III in the field and the V for auto routing in the vehicles.

I enjoy having the same cords and mounts for both units. If I had to drop big dollars on a new one, I am pretty sure it would be a Garmin 60C. I took a look at Gizfinders yesterday and it looks like the real deal. The color display and caches found type features are nice bling bling.

I had the misfortune of trying to figure out an Eagle brand GPS yesterday at the Geocache workshop in Neenah. I never did figure out under the gun how to make the system changes needed to use the pointer for guiding us to the caches! How embarassing! I was able to mark my position and change the coordinates to that of the cache, but the pointer was another thing.

I don’t know if it shows, but I prefer Garmin.

It should be noted that copying a Garmin, Magellan, or pretty much any CD is a violation of copyright laws, and thus is illegal.

While most of us do or will break the law at some time during out lives, it’s not a good idea to advertise it.

I Love my Magellin SporTrac Pro. It has lots of neat features that I am learnign hownto use. Get’s me within a cpl feet on most occasions. That is unless the person placing the cache is off on their coords. The key thing there might be that people are taking the first reading they get and not letting their GPSr go thru the averaging process. Just a theory though. I could be wrong… I was once before !! I use a Garmin GPS III, about $80 used on eBay in mint condition, +$10 s/h. It has street maps and does everything I’ve wanted it to do for the last 10 years without problem. Some of the newer units have WAAS and downloadable maps, which this does not. This unit has been in extremely cold, hot, dry, and humid conditions, and even seen the tops of mountains. I’ve looked at newer units, but they don’t offer any additional features I really need.

I also have a few notes here: http://www.geekteck.com/~pointman/geocaching/index2.html#gpsFeatures
