09/06/2002 at 3:53 am #1745036I use a Garmin GPS V 09/06/2002 at 11:55 am #1745037We are using a Garmin GPS12. It’s a good basic unit. We (I – the beast) are looking to upgrade but haven’t decided on the Garmin V or the 76S. can either of these units be connected to a PDA (Palm m130)? 09/07/2002 at 2:03 am #1745038quote:

But for the next few years, I don’t want any manufacturer coming up with gotta have features, until I can afford another one.

I don’t have a PDA but I do know you can connect a GPSR to a PDA. I have a private pilot friend who borrowed my eMap last year so he could try it out with PDA software that did flight navigation and an HSI (horizontal situation indicator) display. He wanted to use it as a back-up in the airplane in case he ever lost electrical power. It worked great so he bought his own GPSR. 09/07/2002 at 5:06 am #1745040Have you introduced him to geocaching? 09/07/2002 at 5:26 am #1745041quote:

He tooks his kids to find our “Another Pleasant Valley Sunday” cache, but then never created an ID or logged it. I guess some for some people, geocaching just doesn’t click. Anyway, I’m getting off-topic. Sorry. 09/07/2002 at 5:33 am #1745042quote:

As far as I know, no GPSR can.Almost all GPSRs can be connected to PDAs using a standard serial connection. A special serial cable is needed though… the cable needs an end that connects to the communications port of GPSR and another end that connects to the communications port of the PDA. One source of these special cables is Blue Hill Innovations. You can also connect seperate PDA and GPS data cables together or make your own cable. For Palm OS PDAs, there are mapping programs (like the GPS Pilot Atlas) that work with all GPSRs that can send NMEA formatted data (almost all can), as well as programs to manage waypoints, tracks, etc. for specific models of GPSRs (like GPilotS). Personally, I hooked my GPSR (Garmin 12) to my old Palm III about a year ago. Everything worked fine, but I saw no practial use for this setup “in the field”. Plus, the Palm based software for mapping and waypoints was horrible compared to the PC based counterparts like DeLorme Street Atlas and ExpertGPS. Now a small GPS unit that attaches directly to a PDA (like the Magellan GPS Companion) might be more useful… [This message has been edited by jvechinski (edited 09-07-2002).] 09/14/2002 at 4:09 pm #1745043I was using a Garmin GPS12 ,recently upgraded to the GPSmap76S, this thing is amazing, Ive taken it on a week long boating/fishing trip in Canada, Lake of the Woods to be more specific, which you may or may not know is a HUGE lake with 14500 islands. the unit worked great, has quite a few nice features the 12 dosent have, that i’ve made use of already. I’m no expert but I have a pretty good grip on this whole GPS thing, so if you need info about either of these units let me know ,I’d be glad to help. 09/23/2002 at 3:12 am #1745044I’m brand new at this and went out and bought a Garmin eTrex because it was less than a hundred bucks. Perhaps if my wife becomes more enthusiastic about the whole geocaching thing I’ll upgrade but in the meantime this and a magnetic compass works for me. BTW, thanks for the comments on WAAS, I was wondering if I should have picked up a unit with that capability and am relieved I made the correct decision.

It’s getting great reviews and seems to have most of the features I’m looking for.I had a Magellan 315 (which I liked) but upgraded to the 76S (which I like better). 11/01/2002 at 12:17 am #1745046Here’s two cents worth from a newbie. After researching as best I could, I purchased a Magellan Meridian basic w/ Map and Streets software. The price was right (gpsonsale.com) and it had the features I though I would like. I added 64MB of memory to make use of the Map and Streets software purchased with the Meridian. I’ve located about 6 or 7 caches so far. The Meridian has led me to them with what I consider amazing accuracy. Most cache have been right at my feet. I’ll loose signal in heavy cover from time to time. I’m impressed with the detail of the Maps and Streets software and generally pleased with the unit and feel I got my money’s worth. Then again I’ve never used anything else.
