Not that I plan on giving up my Meridian Gold anytime soon, but I was at Gander Mountain in Kenosha yesterday and saw a great buy. Okay it’s a great buy if you want to cross over to the dark side of Garmin.
They have an Etrex Legend with Topo Software in a bubble pack for $199.99. An etrex legend runs $170 usually (so the guy told me) and here you are getting topo for ALL 50 states with a legend for only $30 more. The guy said it was a great price.

B.Q.garmin vs magellan … to me it’s what ever your use to is great; my only experience between the two brands is that we have 2 garmin units and have caches with others that have magellans, while they get about the same accuracy, it seems the magellan people “overshoot” the cache location, then there readings settle down and they end up next to me a minute later, typically near the cache; seems like the garmin responds quicker, maybe that’s not always true, but that’s been my experience in the woods.
lowrance … not sure if this is still the case, but over a year ago I was told that lowrance units take a very long time to upload coordinates into, which is only a noticable problem if you standing in line at an event; someone on the WGA board told me of an experience where it took several minutes to load event coordinates that only take 15 seconds on a garmin or magellan.
I also failed to mention that the Gander Mountain in Germantown had a Magellan Explorist with software (I think it was streets & maps) for $169 or $179.
Another thoughtful gift.

I think Paddler is right about Garmins. 3 of my 9 GPS units were Magellens. I won’t go back. I don’t ever plan on buying another Maggy.
I like my Lowrance units the best, but one BIG thing to consider is, availability of accessories. It is hard to find the Lowrance gadgets these days. Garmin GPS and accessories are just about everywhwere.
Interfacing the GPS with the computer is standard practice. Nobody does it better then Garmin. I’ve helped upload .gpx files at 8 different events. Garmins never give us any problems. They are fast and easy.
About 40% of Magellens give us problems at upload time. The worst seemed to be the Explorists. I downloaded the Explorist software for use at our last event. It took a long time to get it working with our member’s Explorist units. It was too complicated to be beneficial.
I’ve been converted to a Garmin man.
