what if everyone archived some of their caches?
the volunteer trails would grow over.
the “good spots” in the parks would be open for hides.
parks could have a bunch of new caches placed, allowing new cachers a better chance to hide some, and old cachers a chance to revamp their hides.
people who have found all the caches in their area would have new caches to find.
02/05/2008 at 11:37 pm #1884243I archive caches all the time, doesn’t mean someone is placing a new cache. I also never seem to have any problems finding a place to hide a cache.
I do like the idea of getting rid of cacher trails.

Oh wait, I do that too. 8)

Also, I’m sure we all have cachers in our “local” communities that have hidden caches in our areas but have no interest in maintaining them and or removing them. Just look up their profile and see when was the last time they visited geocaching.com. Those should get pulled as well to free up some areas for some fresh hides. Just my 2 cents. Tami

I would hope that those caches that are getting adopted are of some value in challenge or in the scenery, not that they are adopted just to have a cache there. I have shown interest in adopting a couple of area caches whose owner has been absent since October ’06, but cannot adopt them because the owner must initiate the adoption. Since the cache is still there, there is no reason to archive it. The best I can do is to monitor it so that it is available for others to find. Why? Why maintain it? The challenge is worth allowing it to stay active, even more so now as the cache page mentions a way to access the cache that doen’t exist any longer. The bad thing is that I have no way to edit the page to increase the difficulty / terrain ratings other than my posted notes.
Granted there are caches out there that have been abandoned and should fade away.

02/09/2008 at 2:39 am #1884248Funny you should bring this up, Donna, since I am in the process of archiving a few of my current caches for the sake of opening the areas up for newer caches. If someone takes advantage of the site for their hides; that’s great. Otherwise, I may place new caches nearby if no one claims the areas in a year or so, but I really don’t have too many problems in finding new places to hide them, so I may go that route instead. Now if only we could get rid of the foot of snow on the ground around here.
